How to Achieve a Good Night’s Sleep

Everyone benefits from a good night’s sleep. It helps to regenerate cells, refreshes you, replenishes your energy levels and generally sets you up for the day ahead.

A disturbed night’s sleep will have the opposite effect and leave you feeling tired with low energy levels. That’s why it’s important to get proper refreshment and a wool quilt can help you achieve it.

People typically need seven to nine hours sleep each night although some can happily get by on much less. Sleep goes through a number of repeating stages that start with light sleep that gradually gets deeper and eventually finishes with REM (rapid eye movement) sleep as brain activity increases. If, however, you don’t get to sleep within twenty minutes and often wake up for long periods during the night, you won’t be at your best the following day.

How to Sleep Better

Achieving enough good quality sleep is often about having regular habits that will help to train your mind and body. Of course, these habits can be disturbed by stress, changes in living conditions and by travel, especially when going through different time zones. All of these can disturb your sleep patterns but, in general, you just need to follow some simple rules.

1.       Have a routine whereby you go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. There will be days when you can’t stick to this, often at weekends, but a fixed routine will help you to get off to sleep quicker and stay asleep for longer.

2.       Since your body clock reacts to light, try to avoid electronic gadgets immediately before bedtime and switch off all bright lights to help you get to sleep. As soon as you awaken, get out of bed and open the curtains to let in natural light.

3.       Try to avoid sleeping through the day since this will make it more difficult to sleep at night. If you really are tired, a short nap of no more than twenty minutes will be enough to recharge your batteries.

4.       Stay cool because your body temperature drops ready for sleep and any subsequent changes are likely to disturb that sleep.
