How to Accessorize for the Workplace

by Jeff M. Writer

Clothing is a very important factor when it comes to the workplace. Even in the most liberal workplaces, you still want to make a good impression on your colleagues and clients. Accessories are a very important part of your outfit so it’s important that you’re aware of how certain pieces could affect your overall look and what is appropriate for the office.

That is not to say that you should dress in a drab, lifeless style though. Here are five tips that will help you add some color to your office attire without running afoul of the office dress codes, written and unwritten:

Work Within the Rules

That you should follow the rules of your company when it comes to wearing jewelry in certain places and at certain times is a no-brainer, but you also ought to consider the practicality of wearing and removing your jewelry often.

If you’re going to be doing that regularly, then you should select pieces that are easy to remove and wear again as opposed to complicated ones that might take a lot of time and effort. Having people wait for you while you fumble with your jewelry is not really the impression you want to make as a professional.

Be a Minimalist

Generally, formal settings are not ones in which you want to wear anything bogus or too ‘loud’, and jewelry is no different. Stick to one or at most two pieces and make sure that they don’t overwhelm your outfit.

If you must wear multiple pieces, do your best so that they are understated ones that look natural and largely blend in with your outfit.

In addition, colors are trendy now, but there is such a thing as having too much of a good thing. Choose an accessory that gives your outfit a pop, but you don’t want to have a riot of colors on your outfit.

Watch Your Wrists

There is a wide variety of jewelry options when it comes to adorning your wrists, but it’s important that you consider how practical they are for the kind of work that you’ll be doing. Will you be able to move your hands freely and will you not be making a distracting clatter as you gesticulate while talking to a colleague?

Consider the factors of functionality and noise very thoroughly so you don’t end up with something that’ll give the impression that you don’t take your work seriously enough.

Stick to One Statement Piece

Statement pieces are good. They can help you stand out and make you look fabulous in an elegant way. They can even be great conversation starters when you are having a casual meeting with clients and need to break the ice.

Be cautious with them though. Since they are designed to draw attention, wearing more than one at a time can confuse things. For instance, while wearing a pair of unique and eye-catching earrings might be cool, putting on the earrings, bracelets, rings, and necklaces with bold patterns would most likely be seen as overdoing it.
