How Sports Compliments the Modern-Day Education?

by Akash Sharma Akash Sharma
Gone are the days when a student's life was stress-free and the only problem involved was better performance in tests that would determine the student's learning criteria. Exam grades were given more importance, and far less priority was given to skill growth and extra-curricular activities. But the concept of learning has changed dramatically over a period of time in which there is now more emphasis on a comprehensive student growth. These days, colleges, apart from academics, are also focused on extra-curricular activities and sports to make all-round students.

Sports plays an important role in educating students as they are encouraged to become powerful from within and build a healthy and sound body as well. Combining sports in learning can help students grow a self-motivating spirit to do things alone and own them. Being active in sports can help students recover from the syllabus of their regular learning course routine and also reduce the stress of the test. Keeping mind, body and soul in harmony and maintaining a balance between work and play is a great medium. Day-to-day sports training will help students develop leadership skills. Sport teaches well, skills such as endurance, flexibility, and tips for handling stress. It also teaches students how to share victory and defeat and the importance of team spirit and ability.

Nowadays, there is positive graph in favour of schools that lay equal emphasis on sports. In Delhi alone, the number of such schools is quite encouraging. For example, the Shri Ram School is counted among the best school in Delhi, not only academically, but also when it comes to sports. They have shown the way towards understanding that raining in sports has a direct impact on improving the mental as well as physical health of the child and increasing his or her physical endurance. One of the most important things required in sports is the discipline derived from the word disciple–a learned teacher's follower. Coaching in sports helps in developing discipline, self-confidence and the ability of strong will power to determine winning or losing. Educating students in sports increases the power of logic and through constant focus on the current set of activities promotes mental growth. However, it is very important that teachers inspire and respect students every time they put in efforts to make things happen, irespective of the result.

Remember that a good academic history is an important aspect when pursuing a sports career as the qualification for training would act as a long-term supporting pillar. Hits and misses can happen in sports, but a good educational backup can help maintain a good lifestyle in addition to continuing sports. Students should give equal importance to both education and sport and maintain an appropriate balance of success in both fields.
