How Prepreg Composite Materials Provide Advanced Solutions for Industrial Applications

by Nancy Jemes Blogger
What is a Prepreg?
Prepreg is a mixture of reinforcement fibre and thermoplastic, in which the reinforcement fibre is saturated with thermoplastic or thermoset resin matrix into a fixed ratio.

During the manufacture of compound material, the B-stage prepreg needs to be heated in an oven, and after that, it achieves full polymerization. In prepreg reinforcement, it can be a fiber or a unidirectional fabric.

In other words, you can say, prepreg is the common term for a reinforcing material that has been pre-impregnated with an organic compound system. And this organic compound system already includes the set agent correctly. As a result, the prepreg is prepared to put into the mildew but not the addition of any further organic compound. So, as for the laminate to cure, it’s necessary to use a mix of warmth and pressure.

Types of Prepreg:
There are differnet types of prepreg manufactured and used across industries for multiple applications specific to their compositions and properties:

  • Carbon Fiber Prepregs
  • Kevlar Prepreg
  • Fiberglass Prepreg
  • Tooling Prepregs
  • Flame-Retarded Epoxy Prepregs
  • Prepreg Film Adhesive for sandwich panel and more structural applications

Benefits of Prepreg:
There are many major benefits of using a prepreg:

  • You can easily use the prepreg and it is also perfect for maximum restore properties and usually not possible to attain in traditional hand lamination.
  • Without the hazards of the hand lamination process, there will be neither resin-rich areas nor dry spots and the thickness of lamination is uniform.
  • Prepreg has good exhaustion resistance and it has also good environmental and corrosion resistance.
  • It has property of control of fiber volume fraction.
  • Prepreg has better conformity and quality and it has also high specific modulus and strength.
  • It takes less time during the curing process.

Are Prepregs Safe?
Fiber Glass Prepregs are solvent and MDS (Multiscale Design System) free because they are friendly with the environment. But safety precautions are quite necessary for handling process, together with eye and skin protection in addition to glorious ventilation.

Application of Prepreg:
Prepregs are progressively used in the composite industry with high-performance applications. And it is also used in other industries. There are some common and key areas for their usage:

  • Aircraft interiors, aircraft flooring aerospace components, cargo liners
  • Automotive parts and components, ballistic panels, tooling
  • A/C ducting, electronic-transmission application
  • Honeycomb and foam panels, flame retardant laminates
  • High-temperature parts, UV resistant parts

The discovery of specific material format has gone a long-way to understanding the prepregs and decreasing their cost and dashing up their acceptance. An environmental issue promotes interest in a new process that replaces the wet layout and one ideal alternative can be low-temperature prepregs, like prepreg film adhesive for sandwich structure and so.
