How Postal Workers Saved the Election

by Hustlers Feed Hustler's Feed
The history of the 2020 postal votes is the story of a union postal worker who is willing to do everything possible to ensure that every vote is well received. Postal workers did so despite the deliberate raids of new Postal Secretary Louis "Hold Mail" DeJoy, and even though the workforce was heavily affected by VIDOC. More than 65 million people voted for the case by mail, a record. And the postal service has been working with a small number of employees for several months. By August, 40,000 postal workers had been quarantined. Roscoe Woods, president of the Postal Workers Union (APWU) 480-481 near Detroit, said the labor force he represents has been reduced by 30 percent. How did postal workers pull off this gargantuan feat? “Most of our employees were very prideful,” said Keith Combs, president of the APWU Detroit local. “They were really happy they were able to complete the mission with the ballots. They want the Post Office to be seen in a different light than the White House had been portraying it.” ABOVE AND BEYOND Woods represents Michigan Metro employees at Pontiac, the largest postal processing facility in the region. On a normal day, millions of emails are processed there. With such a fast flow, how did workers prevent the voting form from being lost? Mail is sorted by a huge machine that reads envelopes, 36,000 sheets per hour. Prior to the election, workers installed a machine to send ballots to designated denials, took them elsewhere, and sorted them manually. Experienced workers manually classified voting forms according to the zip code of district staff. He was sent by truck from there. The workers went even further. "Let's say a ballot arrives in Flint, but it should go to Muskegon, " said Woods. "Our people met people in the middle to deliver it. I informed my chief operating officer at eight minus a quarter [when the polls close] on Election Day. He had just sent a supervisor with 10 ballots to deliver to the secretariat. "Everything was needed. Our people were up to the challenge. It is not every day that it actively participates in a functioning democracy. GET THE CROOK OUT? Throughout the year, postal workers were attacked by the fundraiser, the Minister of USPS Post Office and Private Logistics. Hundreds of classifiers were dismantled, overtime was denied, and the postman was ordered not to sort all mail when he received it and leave it the next day. Only the postal guild and the public's cries have touched Mr. Dejoy, and on August 18 he announced that he would postpone the pay cut until after the election. But he said he was just taking a break. Believe it or not, Dejoy and his plans are not automatically influenced by the new administration. The people who can hire you and get rid of it are the Supreme Post Office Council. Unfortunately, the current six members are mostly against workers and in favor of privatization. There are three vacant positions that Joe Biden can fill quickly; all appointments must be confirmed in the Senate. One of the promising strategies is to put pressure on active executives who are not used to being the center of attention. In October, New Orleans activists launched a campaign to "prepare for fraud" near the home of the post office staff. Other members are in New York, Los Angeles, East Kentucky, Palm Beach, Washington, and for those with similar inspiration.
