Fort Myers based screen cleaner wipes manufacturer, Awesome Wipes says Americans should clean their smartphones immediately if it has come to contact with anything that cause stains including food, oils, lotion, dirt, or makeup. With the number of cases linking health risks to use of infected smartphone phones continue to rise, there is a need to raise awareness on disinfecting handheld devices at all cost.

“According to a study from Gallup Poll, Americans keep their cell phones with them all day. So it is obvious that these devices should be cleaned as frequent as possible especially when it comes in contact with anything. However, not so many people know about that. It is so plain and common to use a mobile phone these days that most underestimate the likelihood of contracting a disease by just using an iPhone,” said Andrew Reid, founder and CEO of Awesome Wipes.

Handheld devices like smartphones are breeding ground to bacteria like E. coli and Staphylococcus Aurerus. Experts confirm it is dirtier than most toilet seats. The fact that it is used so often by people, it can easily transfer germs and bacteria from any surface to one’s victim, which makes it highly important to make cleaning a habit for smartphone users.

Reid said, smartphones are such an integral part of an individual’s life that the health risks often overlooked at. Unfortunately, the risks are very real. The number of patients acquiring illnesses through an infected smartphone is on the rise.

On the other hand, many smartphone users are not made aware on how to properly clean a handheld device. Most Americans rely on tissue papers, lining of the shirt, or worse, the table cloth to wipe off dirt on a gadget. Especially for those who are always on-the-go, properly disinfecting a device is more often than not forgotten.

It is generally recommended to disinfect a smartphone a few times a day to prevent transfer of bacteria. Phones should also be removed from its case every now and then. The case itself should be cleaned by using an unused toothbrush and rub along the crevices to remove particles of debris.

Awesome Wipes shares the dos and don’ts in cleaning smartphones.

Avoid using abrasive materials like rough cloths, towels, and paper towels. These materials can easily scratch the screen and damage the oil-repelling coating on the glass screen. Smartphones, even without screen protectors, are coated with a thin oil-repelling material that can easily be scratched if not careful.

Don’t use alcohol. Use disinfectant screen wipes to wipe away stubborn stains like food, ink, or hardened dirt. Alcohol directly applied on the screen can tamper with the sensors especially for phones with touch screen capabilities. Specially made screen cleaners like Awesome Wipes are static-free, which makes it the safest option to wipe out germs and dirt at the same time.

Never use ammonia or any common household cleaning agent. Like alcohol, these products have strong ingredients that can harm a device. The moisture itself can get into the openings of a phone and damage it, said Awesome Wipes.
