How NOT to spread the word at APSense
APSense is a business social network. Emphasis on the word "business".
Unless you are into any kind of illegal business, you want as many people as possible to know about you. The fact that you are reading this article means you are a member of APSense, or considering it. Well, good news, there are thousands of people here who want to know about you, and vice versa.
Not about how many dogs you have, or if you eat popcorn for breakfast. They want to know if it could be interesting to do business with you. So, give yourself the best chances possible of being seen. The first place for that is your profile. Of course, when we see a comment written by you, or an article or RevPage, we know a bit about what interests you. But, to know more, the next thing is to go to your profile.
Oops! Your profile can be seen by your contacts only. Well, APSense gives you that choice. But why would you choose that? This is not Facebook. Privacy issues are not the main thing here. We don't want to know about your personal life. We want to build a business relationship with you. It can turn into friendship later on, of course. But most of are very bust spreading the word about our own interests, so it takes time to get to know someone.
APSense is first and foremost about branding yourself. This can only happen if we trust you. How can we trust you if you hide your business information, your haves and wants, your articles, RevPages, your activity?
Think about it. Nobody here wants to eat you alive. If someone likes your profile, sends a contact request, then sends a lot of unsolicited links right after you accept, you have the choice of deleting the connection. Trust me, it doesn't happen often. The spamming, I mean. In most cases, I tell people not to send unsolicited links and they apologize. In rare cases, they are upset and block me, which is fine, because it means they would love to keep spamming me, I guess. So, they're hurting their business, not mine.
I send between 5 to 50 contact requests every day. I don't mind if I don't see your profile. But some people might decide not to bother if they can't see a little bit about you.
Show us your profile. It can only be positive, on a business social network.

Sorry but the personal side matters. I don't mean that you have to give a detailed history but who you are personally speaks to your character and that is much more important that your flavor of the week biz op. No one really cares about a biz-op, they care about what that biz-op can do for them either as an affiliate or a customer. You must brand you, not your biz-op. That means you had better say something that is going to set you apart from the crowd and that comes down to who you are per

Great article Philippe. It always beats me why someone would try and "hide themselves" by revealing so little about themselves - Big question marks usually pop up in my mind . We are here to brand ourselves, network, establish business relationships and eventually grow our businesses.

There is Something for Everyone
Your user name is your brand. Therefore, make it unique. It could be your name or an alias, you decide, but, it should be unique to you. When you do this, you are branding yourself.
What is branding? Making something stand out from the rest. Are you standing out from the rest of us at APSense? If you are, fine. If you are not, reinvent yourself.
Thanks, Philippe, for this article. To the point, as usual.

Agreed, I guess some people who are into internet marketing do not know how important it is to brand yourself. People do not follow businesses they follow people they become friends with and trust.

One more thing I see very often, and in that cass I DO NOT send a contact request, is when I see a member choose only 1 word as a username. I used to not be bothered by that, but nowadays, when I search for a member and all I have is a first name, it is sometimes impossible to find the person, because there are too many "John" or "Mary" already.

I touched a hot spot with that article, and I think I was inspired when I thought of the title, because your comment is the third one I top, Dave. Like you said previously, I hope the message makes its way to a lot of members.

Excellent article Philippe, I would also like to add, hope you don't mind, that people need to show photos of themselves on their profile. I hope many more members read this article.

Ben, I would add that people who don't get contact requests from serious marketers like you don't know what they're missing.

I totally agree. I know that when I reach out to someone on Apsense for the purpose of wanting to get to know them better, unless they're a new member recommended to me by Apsense, I'm going to want to know something about their interests before I send a contact request.

Oh I totally agree - in the online world you have to get out there and not be afraid to be seen - but you can't hide behind your private wall and expect people to learn to trust you. You have to brand yourself, you have to learn to build relationships with people - if you do you will find that most don't bite and you could even learn a thing or two lol. It's really not that hard to meet people - go to their profile and if you actually take the time to read them - you will find something that y
