As we speak of autistic people, we are bound to refer to them as people with special needs and so they are special people. The National Autistic Society (NAS) understands the special needs of these special citizens and thus has made a name for itself with commendable dedication to the service of people with autism.

For us to know what the NAS does, we first need to know what autism is and why is has become so important to consider cases of autism urgently and with care. Autism is a special condition wherein the ability of a person to communicate with the world is adversely affected and remains so for the rest of his or her life. Autism is a spectrum condition, meaning that the people who suffer from the condition may share similar symptoms but the condition would affect each of them in a different way. This means there are levels of autism – some might be having mild symptoms with which they can lead their lives independently and some might be so severely affected that they would always need some assistance or a care-taker to meet their daily routine.

You might think that autism is something that cannot happen at your home or that you won’t such people around you. Well, just going by rough numbers, it can be estimated that autism affects at least one person in hundred; you may do the math. There are flurry of myths that are doing the rounds of the world and NAS tried to dispel those myths this time till the World Autism Awareness Day that is 2nd of April 2013 approached. It was a social media campaign that won accolades from the world over.

This non-profit organization aims to cater to the needs of autistic persons in each step of their life and also create a platform to let families of the special people share their experiences so that they get the best of practices needed. With a presence of over 50 years, this organization for now supports more than 100,000 people in a single year. Going by the increasing trend in the global population figures, increase in the number of special people is expected to rise in posterity.

Going by their mission, the charity organization provides a host of services for people with autism and their families, such as information, support, volunteers, campaigns and special services such as an Autism Specialist Hospital especially for autistic men and womenNot only do they provide the physical support, but they provide emotional support as well as the mental strength to them and hence help them live a life of dignity. Help and all support is provided to people so that they get a choice of the life they want to live like – independent and educated.

The NAS has 20,000 members and over hundred branches; this makes it a bit easy to reach a wide number of autistic crowd but with your help, more affected people may get a better life which may make them bless your beautiful soul for being a part of this organization.
