How Much Cat Litter Do You Need to Put in the Box?

by Kathllin Smith I am a Professional Writer.

Much has been written about how to care your cat. There are numerous books and articles that describe what a pet owner should and shouldn’t do. However, not one of these guides will teach you the most important point i.e. setting up your cat litter. If you put too much litter in the box, it can create serious problems for your cat. Similarly, if you don’t fill the box with enough cat litter, you cat may feel uncomfortable to use it.

Filling the Box with Too Much Litter:

If you use too much cat litter it’ll end up getting kicked out over the box and you’ll end up with it getting tracked everywhere. Moreover, the extra litter will surely find its way onto your floor, carpet, and on stairs. Using too much litter on the box is also wasteful since you have to empty the cat litter and scrub out the box on a regular basis. It is also difficult to get out of scooping or cleaning the litter if you fill the box with too much litter.

Not Enough Litter:

Not using enough litter while filling the box is another important problem. Inadequate or little cat litter on the box actually creates an odor problem since your cat’s urine and poops will have no place to be absorbed and the same will be placed on the bottom of the litter. If the litter smells dirty, it will be far less inviting for your cat to wish to use the litter to take care of their “personal things”. To avoid this problem, you can use odor control cat litter that prevents all types of unwanted odor.

By nature, cats are prone to dig in a substrate, respond to their nature’s call, and then cover her elimination with more of the substrate. This is a basic instinct that even the house cats perform while doing their ‘job’ in the litter box. If you don’t fill the box with enough litter, the cat will have a difficult time in finding the most suitable place in the box and will surely be reluctant to pee or poop. By doing this, you will actually be creating a stressful environment for the cat in the litter. After all you would never want your cat to get a reason to use living room carpet eliminate her.

How much Litter do you need to use?

A general rule for using cat litter is to spread about a four-inch layer of litter in the box. This provides your cat with enough litter material for digging and adequate covering afterward. However, you have to pay attention to your cat’s litter box behavior to check whether you need to adjust that litter level up or down. If you have more than one cat, you should never use one litter box and fill it with too much litter. What you need to do is to use more litter boxes and maintain a consistent cat litter level in all boxes. You should also periodically top off the box with some fresh litter to keep the level consistent.
