How Forklift Training Can Improve Efficiency and Reduce Costs

by Jeff Hough Program Manager

Understanding how you can work to improve forklift safety and increase this extremely useful machine’s efficiency will help to drive business and keep your employees safe. These machines are extremely functional but can be dangerous without the proper safety procedures in place. Training is the first step, but must be implemented and offered on a consistent basis to ensure safety measures are followed.

Training means Reduced Costs

Safety is the first condition to be respected and implemented to fully capitalize on any equipment’s investment. The most efficient way to achieve this goal is through training. What is included in forklift safety training?

·       Control the technical aspects

All forklift drivers must know the types and models of the forklifts the company owns, their capacities, and the suggested speed when transporting a load. To truly appreciate a machine’s full potential, employees must be familiarized with the equipment they use. This will allow them to work faster and more efficiently.

·       Minimize downtime

Forklift accidents can cause several undesirable effects. Downtime, economic losses, and accidents that can cause injuries are a few examples. Even in a light-scale scenario, an accident will induce inventory damage. Time is always an issue, and its waste is crucial. From clean up, to costly repairs of technical damages, your normal rhythms and workflow will be disrupted. Training will minimize accidents’ frequency.

·       Offer Consistent Training

Constant forklift training will only improve your employees and their skills. Productivity will rise by the efficiency of material handling. It is very important to handle machinery with dexterity and confidence. Another key element is that machines are constantly evolving, and all employees must remain up-to-speed with the latest technical advancements and ameliorations.

·       Take Personal Responsibility

Proper training will propel the degree of the personal responsibility and investment of every worker. Deep knowledge of a machine will enable the person who controls it, to spot and solve possible problems before they even arise.

·       Retain Workers

Through training, workers will feel safer and calmer, minimizing the urge to search elsewhere for better working conditions. This helps a business gain stability and optimal function, with personnel that knows and understands the specificities of the workplace. No time will be lost in long hiring processes.

·       Increase Longevity of Machines

Trained drivers will operate the machinery the textbook way and by this only, your forklift’s life span will be extended. Extending the life of your forklifts will help to decrease downtime and save costs on purchasing or leasing new equipment.

·       Ensure Compliance

Training will also cover another important condition, compliance. Forklift operation training is required by OSHA.

To Conclude

Improving forklift safety it is not only about increasing efficiency. The price of a forklift is already too high for you to create additional costs. By making training a priority, you’ll keep your employees safe, reduce downtime, and drive business results.
