by Natasha Manual Digital Marketing Specialist

Kerala’s most iconic and traditional Onam festival is ongoing with celebrations all around the corners. Corporate spaces are gearing up with celebrations where employees embellishing with traditional ethnic wear. They engage in togetherness, decorate their office spaces, make the most iconic Onapookkalam and share the most delightful Onasadya. But at the end of the day, when celebrations are over and you have posted all your pictures on your social media sites, hundreds of workers are collecting garbage left behind around office spaces. Heaps of remnants of the food that you just irresponsibly handled lies around the garbage box in and around your workspace. After all those celebrations, do you think the real essence and value of Onam is being fulfilled, when piles of food are wasted and millions are starving to death due to hunger?

We live in a world where too much (way too much) of food produced is wasted. Last year, humanity has collectively wasted approximately 1.3 billion tons of food. When we are collectively approaching for a solution to curb food waste, it is way too complicated than just ensuring that everyone has enough to consume every day. The whole food cycle needs to be altered, a lot of processes need to be refined, new infrastructure needs to placed and more awareness needs to be spread. However, if every individual is ready to change his/her mindset, things are a lot more simple than anything. In the consumer world, anywhere food is produced, sold or eaten, a portion of it is wasted as well. Let’s take a closer look at what happens during the food cycle in each phase.

Agricultural Production

In this stage, most of us would be probably imaging “they’re making food. How are they wasting it?” That pinpoints the process of how products are made and how well are they balanced with nature. A significant portion of the harvest doesn’t yield healthy crops, besides losing its quality due to deterioration and spillage.

Handling and storage

Another significant portion of the waste occurs during the post-harvest handling and storage segment. The longer duration of transportation accompanied by spillage can be the primary reason for food waste in this process. Now once it reached the retailers, some extent of the food products become rotten due to the lack of proper storage facilities.

Food Processing

The food items that are harvested needs to be processed in order to make it edible for conception. While processing, some of the foodstuffs will be spilled or either discovered unfit during the process for conception. Harvested products when slaughtered, peeled, sliced or washed can fail to meet the grading mechanisms and thereby leads to food wastage.

Distribution

The processed edible food products will have an expiry date for consumption. Going beyond the expiry date can be considered as unhygienic to consume. It is not necessary to demand that all the processed food products should be consumed within the expiry timeframe. Most of the time the food processed might fail to reach the needy due to geographical differences.
