How does the notorious blue light affect your body and health?

Just about all modern mobiles phones, computers and energy efficient light bulbs emit something called ‘blue light,’ which is downright dangerous. Let's see why.

The circadian rhythm

Our body has an internal clock that keeps us alert and attentive in the daytime and sleepy at night. This biological process relies heavily on the production of melatonin, a hormone released in the brain that helps us sleep. In the daytime, the melatonin levels are low, while at night they are high. However, if we’re exposed to light for long hours at night by staring at our phone or computer or even when sleeping with the light on, our melatonin levels will remain low. This could alter our circadian rhythm, confusing our brain and keeping us awake for longer.

In one study led by Harvard University, it was discovered that exposure to blue light can suppress melatonin release and shift the circadian rhythm by a few hours. In another study carried out in Toronto, people who were exposed to blue light but were wearing blue-blocking glasses had the same levels of melatonin compared to those who were not exposed to any blue light at all.

So what effect does blue light really have on the body?

Sadly, the effects are not limited to affecting one's sleep. Excessive exposure to blue light has now been linked to weight gain, heart disease, depression and even some forms of cancer. Children seem to be greatly impacted by blue light as well. Children and infants exposed to a great amount of blue light have a higher risk of developing a condition called macular degeneration, which can lead to the development of cataracts and is a primary cause of blindness in adult life.

Preventing damage

There’s no guaranteed way to prevent eye damage from blue light as it’s all around us and we are exposed to it every day. Of course, the most effective way to limit the exposure is to avoid using your phone or laptop for at least 3 hours before you head to bed. But perhaps that’s not practical in this day and age.

Alternatively, you can invest in a pair of high-quality blue blockers so that even if you're being exposed to blue light, you stay safe from its ill effects to a large extent.
