How Does Schooling Look Amid Pandemic?

by Akash Sharma Akash Sharma

Desperate times call for desperate measures. To slow the spread of this deadly disease; governments around the world mandated the closure of schools. As a result of which schools started home based online classes to bridge the gap of education.

Speaking about the issue in detail, stigma has faded with the technology advancement but somehow it’s been disruptive to get along with the speed of virtual reopening of schools. Technology made everything easier. While it just takes one click to enter an online class, the situation is taking a toll on students' mental health. Mere rushing into online learning is not enough, ensuring effective results is another important aspect. Digging deeper into the issue reflects positives and negatives of the facet.

Positives

Asynchronous online learning has become an important part of the system when students are confined to their homes. Along with unprecedented opportunities, virtual classes set a new paradigm for educators to provide high quality education. Top schools of Delhi including The Shri Ram School makes sure to help their students in overcoming the hurdles.

Anytime, anywhere: Access to internet connection made it easier for teachers and students to pace with the schedule. Although this pandemic has paused everything; thanks to a tech savvy environment to make it possible for children to join the session while sitting anywhere in the world. It’s convenient for everyone to learn at their pace.

Student centered: While students pay attention to the whole session, online classes allow students to take special part in those dialogues that they consider most relevant after paying attention to comments made by everyone on the topic.

Saved sessions: Sometimes due to family commitments or any other emergency, if any student is unable to attend the live session, saved sessions can be proved helpful to catch up later.

 Negatives

Just like the two sides of a coin, this system too is inherited with flaws that can pose threat to development of others.

The board is never erased: It’s not possible for everyone to get along at the same pace. Unlike traditional ways of teaching, students come up with lousy notes and find it difficult to clear the doubts in an ongoing session.

Computer literacy: It is very important for students as well as teachers to possess minimum knowledge about technology. Getting handy with basic knowledge about the concepts supporting online sessions like zoom and Skype is the need of the hour. Failure on anyone’s part can drag the whole system down.

Digital divide: Even with technological advancements, many students deprive themselves of internet connection, laptops and smart phones. Despite the inevitable challenges, it’s time to reconsider the system that benefits partially. To not confront with similar barriers in future, some serious measures need to be adopted.
