As technology advances, enterprises are adapting their recruiting process to keep up with their hiring demands. Businesses no longer conduct skills tests in physical locations, instead, they favor virtual testing to find qualified candidates. Further, conducting interviews online using video interviewing helps enterprises save time and money. It’s becoming easier to find candidates online that are best suited for the job.
How do businesses conduct pre employment tests? What are the different types of pre employment tests? Can the tests be conducted for any subject or topic?

Many companies conduct pre employment tests. These companies help enterprises select, customize, and finalize the test form. Then, they assist in conducting the test for the candidates, assessing the forms, and shortlisting the eligible candidates for the next stage of the hiring process.

There are many different types of pre employment tests. They can be job-based, module-based, subject-based, behavioral, aptitude, and even personality assessments. Businesses can choose different types of tests for each step in the hiring process. For example, if the test is conducted in the initial stages of recruiting, it will most likely be job-based or module-based rather than a personality test.
Some are regularly conducted. A good example is the Computer Skills Test. Almost every job requires candidates to use a computer. For instance, basic data entry, web design, accounting, and more all require computer skills. The type of computer assessment and the difficulty level depend on the job description and the requirements of the business.

There are three difficulty levels for each test:
  • Basic
  • Intermediary
  • Advanced
A test conducted for computer skills can cover a variety of topics ranging from MS Office software to hardware and networking. The advanced simulations and interactive test form allow enterprises to create real-time questions. Candidates will have to solve a problem, write code, or debug a program as part of the test.

Another popular form is for Excel Skills Testing. Microsoft Excel is used as a database and accounting software by many businesses. Though there are advanced software solutions for the same purposes, Excel is used to store the basic information about customers, sales, products, and accounts. Excel has many features that help sort, filter, and categorize data.
The test can be divided by difficulty level as follows:
  • Entering data, adding borders, using text formatting features, sorting data, etc. are put under the basic level. The test form does not include questions that require complex actions.
  • Using the formulae such as sum, average, etc. auto-filling data, merging and text wrapping, creating tables, etc. fall under the intermediate level.
  • Turning raw data into decisions using pivot tables and charts, creating formulae to process the data and arrive at the required result, automating the spreadsheets using macros, etc. are part of the advanced level excel test.
The excel assessment test is commonly used when conducting pre employment tests for-
  • Personal and Executive Secretaries
  • Executive or Administrative Assistants
  • Office Managers or Human Resource Assistants
  • Sales, Marketing and Operations Executives
  • Entry-level Accountants
Enterprises can ensure that only skilled and eligible candidates clear the test by customizing the test forms. This makes hiring qualified candidates much easier.
