How Do You Choose an Electric Bike?

by Jack John Writing

Electric bikes - also commonly referred to as e-bikes - are all the rage at the moment. E-bikes are an ideal option for cyclists wanting a little help on hill climbs and for commuters looking for an economical, sweat-free mode of transport. Lately, I've seen curious passersby stop at the cycling store just to check these beauties out. So just how do electric bikes work?

How do Electric Bicycles work?

Firstly, electric bikes use a rechargeable battery that powers a small electric engine to provide some "go" when you need it. Some models have a pedal sensor that determines how much help you need depending on the effort you use. Other types have a motorcycle-like throttle on the handlebars that let you decide how much power to use. This is all fantastic if you intend to carry some groceries up a hill occasionally or need to arrive at your destination without being drenched in sweat! Since e-bikes are in fact bicycles, they are limited to a top speed of 15-20mph with their motor running and average power of 200W. Here are some factors to consider in choosing your electric bike.

Electric Bicycle Weight

The motor, frame, and battery are the heaviest parts of an ebike. Cheaper e-bikes will tend to have heavier motors and batteries. This might be alright for more petite Chinese commuters who weigh around 50-60kg but not so great for the average 70-90 kg Western adult. After all, the heavier the electric bike is, the harder it is to pedal unassisted.

Electric Bicycle Motors

Motor power will determine how fast the bike will go. Speed varies according to the rider's weight and the wheel size. The latter is a factor as the same motor attached to a 20" wheel has to turn faster when attached to a 24" wheel to reach the same speed.

Electric Cycle Batteries

The battery supplies power to the electric motor. A fully charged average battery's range is normally between 12 to 30 miles with gentle pedaling, the actual distance varying according to the weight and size of the rider and the terrain being ridden. Smooth, dry pavement, for example, will give a much higher range than wet grass or loose dirt.

What Kind of People Can Use an Electric Bike?

Generally speaking, electric bikes are ordinary bicycles powered by rechargeable batteries. Electric bicycles are a fast-emerging trend among people nowadays and many people prefer to choose them. However, though an electric bike can bring people a lot of advantages, not everyone can enjoy the whole benefits of using it. In this article, I would like to tell you what kind of people can use electric bicycles.

The daily commuters

Daily commuters always consider daily commuting a troublesome thing because they always have to deal with traffic jams. However, with the emergence of electric cycles, they find that riding electric bikes is much more convenient. Electric cycles are fast and cheap to ride. Moreover, they do not need to spend time and money finding a parking lot when they arrive at their destinations.

The environmentalists

An environmentalist is a person who believes in the philosophy of environmentalism. Environmentalists always identify themselves as greens and they are very concerned about the environment. Therefore, electric bikes are popular among them because hovsco ebike are environmentally friendly. An electric bike is powered by a rechargeable battery rather than gasoline, so it does not produce carbon dioxide and will not pollute the air.

People who want to lose weight

An electric bicycle is suitable for people who want to keep fit or lose weight because it can provide them with the chance to exercise. An electric cycle has pedals, so people can get exercise by pedaling. Besides, when they feel a little tired, they can ride the electric bicycle to have some rest.

The senior citizen

Many old people are forced to quit cycling due to their age. Besides, when they want to go somewhere far away, they find it is difficult for them to take a bus. However, electric bicycles can help them solve all the problems. Electric bikes are safe, fast, and sweat-free. Seniors can have short trips around town or go somewhere far away by riding electric cycles.

People who cannot afford cars

Driving a car is expensive. Cars are costly, the parking fees are high and the car maintenance is expensive. So, some people cannot afford a car. However, an electric bike can be considered an alternative to a car. Almost everyone can afford an electric cycle because it is cheap to buy and maintain. Besides, you do not need to take a driving test to ride an electric bicycle.
