How do hookahs work, and what exactly is a chillum?

by Mohit J. White Hat Link Building Services

So, you have probably seen a hookah before, even if you live in the West, and might even know it by that particular terminology. However, your exposure to it will likely have been through popular media, because this is where it is a common problem onset set in far-flung locations, exotic places like the Middle East, Egypt or near East Asia, the regions of the world where they were first used, and are still an integral part of the culture.

However, you may not be entirely sure how they work, what exactly they are, and why they are getting so much traction in the West today is a much healthier way to enjoy tobacco. Today, we will explain what these devices are, the type of tobacco they use as well as touching on the cultural relevance of these devices in their native lands.

First, let’s talk a little bit about the tobacco. It isn’t like that tobacco put in cigarettes, pipes or cigars, as it isn’t intended to burn. It isn’t dry, is extremely moist, often sticky and vibrantly colored, and it is usually infused with various traditional flavors such as fruit, mint or in modern times, all manner of unique combinations. This tobacco, commonly called shisha or chillum, isn’t burnt, as said previously. It actually is slowly roasted and vaporized, using the ambient heat from charcoal which does in fact burn. The charcoal, when burning, does not actually impart any smoke inhaled by the users, eliminating one of the biggest problems with tobacco – the toxic nature of smoking in general. Smoke is made of ash, oils and carcinogenic byproducts of combustion, but the carcinogenic compounds and the ash are not present when using a hookah, at least not in any significant amounts.

In the cultures whence a hookah originates, these are highly social devices, hence the multiple tubes connected to the central chamber which contains the smoke. Each user gets their own mouthpiece, and traditionally, trade negotiations, political negotiations and general socializing have been done while sharing a hookah with the pungent, flavorful shisha or chillum tobacco.

In recent years, with the growing hatred towards traditional smoking present in the social consciousness, people are seeking healthier ways to enjoy nicotine products, and the two approaches of choice are electronic solutions, something that absolutely isn’t for everyone, and the use of a hookah. Naturally, using a hookah would be prohibited anywhere any other kind of smoking is, in the same be said for electronic solutions as well, so they are fairly evenly-matched on their pros and cons.

If you worry about the traditional Middle Eastern design clashing with your, you needn’t worry, as modern hookah designers in New Zealand, Australia and Europe have taken the use of glass and artistic expression/engineering to a new level, creating styles of hookah that meet modern Western expectations of elegant minimalism or extravagant luminance, depending on your tastes.
