How Could A Counsellor Help To Make Your Life Easier?

How Could A Counsellor Help To Make Your Life Easier?

It is worth considering talking to a counsellor because they are trained to be good listeners and they have experience of all manner of issues they won’t judge you or tell you how you live your life, but they can help you find ways to move forward.

You may even feel that, because a counsellor is not emotionally involved, you can be more open and tell them what you might not say to a family member or friend.

It can also be a good idea to talk to your GP, especially if you have felt depressed for weeks on end and can see no light at the end of the tunnel. He or she will be able to determine whether there is anything else – such as a physical illness – that is causing your depression, and may suggest that you see a specialist.

A Problem Shared …

Major life transitions, such as the passage from working life into retirement, can be hard for us to deal with – and there’s no shame in feeling the need to ask for help.

On the contrary, keepingyour thoughts and feelings to yourself allows them to build up inside you and become muddled. That’s not good for your wellbeing.

Talking aloud to someone elsecan often make things seem less scary. Putting thoughts into words helps to sort them out and give a clearer sense of what you can do to address what bothers you. That has the potential to make you feel less overwhelmed.

It isalso worth bearing in mind that the person you talk to is likely to have a different perspective, and may thereforecome up with ideas or suggest solutions that you might not have considered.

Who Might You Talk To?

While there are many people out there who you could talk to, what is most important is that you are comfortable with the person youchooseand feel you can trust them.

That person may be a family memberwho couldgive you emotional and practical support – or you may have friends who can relate to your difficulties from their own experience and help you to see things in a new light.

Another option would beto talk to someone - such as a counsellor – who has not previously been involved and can therefore be objective about the situation.
