How Can Specialized Training Make You Better at Executive Protection?

by Executive Protection Institute EPI was founded in 1978

Many of those who aspire to enter the field of executive protection look forward to the glitz and glamour of working for the rich and famous. Still, they often fail to consider one critical aspect of becoming an executive protection officer — specialized training.

Much like the New York City Police Department (NYPD), an executive protection officer’s job remains great fodder for movies and TV shows — think of the 2018 British TV series “Bodyguard” on Netflix. Of course, the fictional portrayals of executive protection officers or bodyguards are all blown out of proportion; it is unlikely that you will be hired to investigate a major terrorist plot. What you will be hired to do is keep your client safe at all times. Doing that requires extensive training that you can get from an executive protection training program.

Executive protection training is designed to prepare executive protection professionals for real-world experiences. You learn from experienced professionals. You study alongside fellow enthusiastic trainees. You receive a curriculum that is tailored to your field of work. There cannot be a more direct and effective way to prepare for a career in the executive protection industry.

It is worth noting that you will not receive any training or education on the job, making it all the more important to enroll in a training program before you start sending your job applications. Only once you are trained and certified can you work with a bodyguard staffing agency to explore your opportunities.

What do you need to enroll in an executive protection training program?

In most cases, you will need to meet a few requirements before starting your bodyguard training path:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older.
  • You must have a high school diploma.
  • You must be in great physical shape.
  • It would help if you were well-groomed. Executive protection officers need to look and act highly professional and unassuming – in other words; you must look sharp all the time with no distracting facial hair, hairstyles, or tattoos.
  • You need to pass a criminal background check, so be sure to clear up even the smallest issues, such as overdue parking tickets.
  • You must pass the drug screening.
  • You must be naturally vigilant and alert.
  • You must have excellent communication skills.

What will you learn in an executive protection training course?

No two executive protection jobs are the same. You may be required to defend your clients from threats as extreme as stalking, harassment, assault, kidnapping, or even assassination, or as non-threatening as public humiliation. This could mean managing a huge crowd or securing a large area.

The role of an executive protection officer is extensive. Therefore, your executive protection training will cover a variety of “modules.” Expect your training to cover everything from surveillance detection and security driving to conflict management and escorting the client.

If you want to begin your career as an executive protection officer, understand that extensive executive protection training is required to ensure you are a viable candidate who can perform under pressure, regardless of the situation or the client.
