How Can Different types of Roofs be made Cool?
A cool roof is characterized by its feature of absorbing
less heat as compared to a traditional roof. You can convert your existing roof
to a cool roof with the help of a reflective paint, a covering sheet,
reflective shingles and tiles. Different products are available for converting
various types of roofing systems. With its various benefits - cost savings
being a major one - cool roofs are increasingly becoming popular. Here’s how
common roofing systems can be converted to cool roofs.
Modified Bitumen
These
types of roofs have one or more layers of rubber or plastic material and are
surfaced with mineral granules for a smooth finish. These materials are held
together with rolled reinforcing fabric and are fastened to the roof deck with
adhesive or hot asphalt. Usually modified bitumen roofs are Gray or black; thus
they absorb heat, rather than reflecting sunlight. This type of roof can be
made cool with the help of a white coating. This will raise the solar
reflectance according to the cool roof standards. The price of a cool modified
bitumen as is same as the traditional modified bitumen.
Asphalt
Shingle Roofs
These roofs are available in a variety of materials such as
wood, polymers, fibreglass, and metals with overlapping panels. The available of
variety and durability makes it a popular roofing choice, especially for
residential purposes. These roofs can be made cool by replacing the standard
asphalt shingles with cool asphalt shingles. They contain a special coating of
reflective granules which help in reflecting better. Other types of shingles
such as wood, metal etc. can also be coated to improve their reflectance.
Tile Roofs
Clay, slate or concrete tiles, almost all types of tiles are
used in roofing. They can be customized by coating with any colour of your
choice. Depending on the type of clay and colour, some tiles have natural
cooling properties. While the remaining types of tiles can be made cool through
surface treatments which transform low solar reflective tiles to cool tiles.
Metal Roofs
Metal roofs are available with metallic finishes, granular
coated surfaces or oven-baked paint finishes. It possesses high solar
reflective but poor thermal emission properties, thus fail to qualify as a cool
roof. They can be converted by applying a cool reflective coating. Painting a
metal roof will improve the thermal emission quality of the roof and allow it
to qualify as a cool roof.
