A food safety supervisor has a large job.  Not only are they ensuring the safety of their staff, they are ensuring the safety of the people that consume their product.  One simple error can become a fatal flaw.  While it is up to everybody employed to make sure that they follow the rules and guidelines of safe food practices, it is up to the supervisor to ensure that they are all being followed precisely and accurately.  From cleanliness to proper food handling and storage, each procedure goes hand in hand with the other to create an overall bacteria free environment.

There were 76 million food related illnesses last year in the United States, of those, 5,000 are fatal.  The highest offender of food poisoning is still meat, while the least likely to create illness is fruit.  Being able to better predict when these incidents may occur and stop them before they happen is crucial to any food service venue.  While the onus is on the staff to follow all procedures, it is up to the food safety supervisor to ensure that this is being done. Everybody involved from service to cleanup needs to be completely aware of proper procedures and be able to recognise when this is not being correctly followed.

The need for proper food handling begins at the agriculture stage.  Long before it is prepared for consumption, the food originates elsewhere on a farm. It is harvested and moved to a factory for processing. From here, it is packaged and distributed.  The food venue either has it directly delivered or purchased this product from a store.  Each person involved, purchases the products with the assumption that the previous company has followed all the necessary procedures. If there is a flaw with processing, handling or storage during any of these steps, than the problem compounds as it moves further down the road.  It is essential that proper procedures are adhered too carefully during every step of the way.  A food safety supervisor is generally thought of as somebody that works in a restaurant or bar.  This is hardly the case, supervisors are needed on farms, slaughterhouses, production plants, packaging plants and any other industry that directly handles food.

Anything, when handled incorrectly will increase your chances of harboring bacteria.  That harmful bacteria can grow as it hides.  The results are ill affected public, food recalls and lost revenue.  Much of this can be avoided by simply following the proper procedures.  The right education is needed, not only to keep your own environment safe and healthy, but to also protect all who use your services.  A food safety supervisor will have an intimate knowledge about handling and operations and will be able to properly supervise all staff in their care.  By correctly following the government set guidelines and rules, customers can be assured that the food at a venue that is safe to eat. A properly run venue will quickly earn a winning reputation, increasing both its popularity and revenue.   Keep your own venues at the top of the list. A food safety supervisor can be the link between a successful business and one that ends in permanently closed doors.
