When buying new windows for your home or looking for replacement windows there are some things you need to watch out for when researching which window company to go with.

Plenty of reputable companies don’t manufacture their own window, but it is a warning sign. They are unabashedly middle men, and their business model is based around which product comes at what wholesale price, can they get a third party (subcontractor) to install for them. Is this the best window for me, or is this just the window they like selling the most? Such companies will be found regularly flipping between which windows they sell, and often, which windows they honor warranties on.

“Look at the numbers!”

For being so clear, windows are very complicated, and most people are rarely in the position to buy them. A little bit of information can get you a long way, but a bad product often finds itself being sold off of hard numbers. Windows have standardized ratings that tell you in a scientific manner the percentage of heat or cold the window will keep out or in, and will rely on the audience to misinterpret that as value. A good number means nothing if the parts are cheap, the seals will break, or the installation will be done sloppy.

Warranties with service charges

Usually hidden in the small print, even normal warranty coverage can cost service charges, to pay for the person that has to come out and fix their product that is having issues. More than anything, it lets you know that they aren’t all that interested in honoring their warranty. They’re passing some of the warranty upkeep costs onto the consumer, and if they consumer is discouraged by that enough to not have a service done; they entirely avoid any cost that would have been incurred fixing the problem. Sure, its entirely reasonable your product has issues, but the company that charges for service expects them, the one that doesn’t attempts to avoid them entirely.
