Overview: Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Hodgkin lymphoma may arise anywhere in the body where lymphocytes are found. Hodgkin lymphoma has the characteristics that distinguish it from all the other types of the lymphoma, notably the presence of the cell known as the Reed Sternberg cell. The Reed Sternberg cell is a large, abnormal cell which does not guard the body from infection. When it multiplies abnormally, it often forms the tumor within the lymph node and draws inflammatory cells around it. While the reason is unknown, some of the factors have been shown to raise the risk of the developing Hodgkin lymphoma.

Symptoms of Hodgkin's Lymphoma

In Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, the patient may observe:

1. Painless swelling in lymph nodes without any kind of infection
2. Cough, shortness of breath, pain or abdominal swelling, nerve pain and swelling in legs
3. Horner’s syndrome which is a neurological problem that affects the eyes and face
4. Fever in the late afternoon or early evening for 14 days or longer. The temperature generally go above 102 degrees Fahrenheit, 2 times a day
5. Pain in abdomen area, particularly after consuming alcohol
6. Unexplained weight loss
7. Sweating heavily or extreme chills during nights for fourteen days or more
8. Pain in bones
9. Susceptibility to infections and itching in body

Surgical Treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Surgery plays a little role in Hodgkin’s lymphoma treatment, and it is rarely used as the therapeutic option. For few lymphomas that occur in the organs outside of lymph nodes like the stomach or thyroid, surgical resection of the tumor can be considered. However, surgery is associated with complications such as adhesions (abnormal "joining" of the tissues and organs by fiber like bands), cosmetic effects and nerve injury and it does not prevent the tumor re-growth.

Surgery is used to insert the venous access device (for example: porta cath), the plastic tube that is surgically implanted into the large vein in upper arm or the chest, to reduce the requirement of repeated needle sticks during the drug injections or removal of the blood samples.

In one of three patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma, the spleen is involved. Splenectomy was performed previously for confirmation of this. Newer imaging modalities especially use of the ultrasound and chemotherapy has rendered this procedure unnecessary today.
