High Score on the ASVAB Work Knowledge Section
The ability to communicate through words is part of everyday life. We use words to communicate with people around us. There are two subtests in the language section - Paragraph Comprehension and Word Knowledge. Cumulative scores of both these tests are used to calculate the VE (Verbal Expression) portion of the AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) score. Word Knowledge is a multiple-choice test that analyses your grasp over the English language by testing your vocabulary skills. You are asked to find out the synonym or antonym of a specific word from the given multiple choice answers. For example:

In this question, the correct answer is choice (b). From the given options, ‘imitate’ is the closest synonym of emulate.
You could also face a similar question in an indirect manner. You will be given a particular word in a sentence and you will need to find its meaning based on how the word is used within the context of the sentence. For instance:

David's new cell phone worked great, but every now and then he would hear intermittent static.
a) loud
b) soft
c) periodic
d) vehement
By the words ‘now and then’, you can make out that ‘intermittent’ should mean something that is not constant but repeats after a while. Here the answer (c) periodic holds the closest meaning and is hence the correct answer!
