High blood pressure is a growing concern in recent times, which has affected the majority of our population. Due to the lifestyle, food habits and other causes, the blood pressure of people gets elevated and it requires various measures in order to bring it to a normal level. Nowadays, it is also possible to buy meds online via online stores such as Netmeds. Netmeds offers multiple medications for high blood pressure.

Various medication is effective in keeping the blood pressure under normal range. These medications can be divided into 5 different classes.

1. Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors

This enzyme blocks the action of certain other hormones that can cause blood pressure to rise. For example, Angiotensin II causes the arteries to constrict and as a result, the level of blood pressure rises.

Functions:

• Blocks/inhibits the action of Angiotensin II so that blood pressure doesn’t rise.
• Reduces the blood supply to the kidneys in order to regulate the blood pressure level.

Benazepril, Captopril Enalapril falls under ACE inhibitors.

2. Calcium Channel Blockers

The calcium channel blockers decrease the calcium level in blood. A drop in Calcium relaxes the muscles, thus, it widens the arteries. Hence, there is an overall effect of a drop in blood pressure level.

Though there are some side effects that are associated with these types of medications.

• Redness of the skin.
• Swollen ankle.
• Fatigue.
• Skin rash etc.

Amlodipine, Felodipine, Nicardipine, etc fall under the class of Calcium channel blockers.

3. Thiazide Diuretics

This type of medication regulates the blood pressure level by acting on kidneys to get rid of sodium and water. As a result of this, the overall volume of blood decreases and hence, blood pressure is also brought back to the normal range.

Functions:

• Mainly affects kidneys to get rid of water and sodium.
• These are mostly used for regulating high blood pressure as they lower the blood volume in order to decrease the pressure.

Though it also has some side effects such as

• Lowers blood-potassium which could have a negative effect on kidney and heart.
• Erectile dysfunction also has been reported as a side effect of this drug.
Chlorothiazide, Chlorthalidone, Metolazone are some medications which are thiazide diuretics.

4. Beta-blockers

Beta blockers were one of the most used medication for high blood pressure once upon a time but since there are better alternatives now, it has taken a back seat. Though, when other medication fails to show any sign of improvements, beta blockers are tried to check if it can bring down the blood pressure level.

Functions:

• They make the heart rate slower.
• They also reduce the force at which the heart pumps out the blood.
Due to these two actions, the blood pressure level drops and normal range could be achieved.

But as with other drugs, it also has some side effects.

• The person may feel fatigued.
• Cold hands and feet are also one of the side effects of this medication.
• Nausea and diarrhea also could accompany while taking this medication.

Acebutolol, Atenolol, Bisoprolol, Nadolol are some examples of beta blockers.

5. Renin inhibitors
Renin inhibitors indirectly reduce the blood pressure by blocking the production of Angiotensin I which in turn ultimately reduces the production of Angiotensin II. Since Angiotensin II actively plays a key role in increasing blood pressure, thus blocking its production, results in the lowering of blood pressure.

Devices
There are various heart-monitoring devices that can give an indication of your health. Now, these devices can even send data to your smartphone so that you can understand them in a user-friendly manner.

Though, high blood pressure is a growing issue, the availability of medication has somewhat kept it in control. With the arrival of online stores such as Netmeds, where Netmeds offers different medications, it has become much convenient to buy medications at one’s ease.
