Hernia: Everything You Need To Know

by Akash Sharma Akash Sharma
Do you notice a pain or bulge in the groin or abdominal wall? If the answer is yes, the chances are you might be suffering from hernia.  It is better to get a diagnosis done however before jumping to any conclusions. Hernia is quite common and treatment is vital to avoid complications. Here’s everything you need to know about a hernia in order to develop a better understanding of the problem-

What Is Hernia?

As per the best urologists in Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai, they define Hernia as a disruption or weakness in the abdominal wall muscles that paves way for content to “herniate” or pass through the body cavity into some other space is known as a hernia.  While some are natural hernias occurring at places such as the groin or the belly button, others are a result or prior surgeries.

Types of Hernias

Depending upon its location, there are many types of hernias that can develop with most common being the ones that occur in the groin. They are also known as an inguinal hernia. Here are some other types-

•Umbilical Hernia- occurring at the navel.

•Incisional Hernia- occurring at the site of the prior surgical incision.

•Epigastric Hernia- occurring in the middle of the abdomen above the navel.

•Femoral Hernia- occurring right below the groin

•Hiatal Hernia- occurring at the part of the stomach that bulges into the chest via the diaphragm.

Symptoms of Hernia

Bulge around groin, abdominal or scrotum that might grow in size with time.

An increase in the size of the bulge while coughing, straining during urinating, bowel movements, crying, laughing or performing other activities.

A bulge that increases in size while sitting or standing and disappears while lying down.

Pain during lifting or performing strenuous activity.

A dull aching pain at the hernia site.

Bowel blockage symptoms.

Hernia Diagnosis

A doctor conducts a simple physical examination for the detection of abdominal wall hernias. Further CT scan, ultrasound and MRI, however, might be required to confirm the diagnosis. In the case of hiatal hernias, a physical examination is not sufficient and GI study or endoscopy might be required. Always go to the best urology treatment in India for further assistance in case the tests come out to be affirmative.

Stages of Hernia Development

A hernia sac is formed when the abdominal lining protrudes through weak abdominal wall muscles. This sac usually consists of intestines, fat and other tissues. The sac gradually increases in size due to an accumulation of more abdominal content leading to the formation of a visible bump. If the bump disappears when lying flat or on the application of pressure it is known as a reducible hernia that is not really dangerous. When the abdominal contents get trapped by muscles, the condition is known as an incarcerated hernia. Immediate medical attention is required if the bulge does not disappear on lying flat or applying pressure at this point. The last stage known as strangulation is when the intestines become intensely trapped, choking off the blood supply to the intestines.
