Hormones are an integral part of our body systems and regulate our body. There are lots of Hormonal disorders but today we will talk about Conn's syndrome and its ayurvedic aspect in detail!

Introduction

It is a rare health problem that occurs when the adrenal gland makes too much aldosterone. Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid hormone . It is secreted by the zona glomerulosa, the outermost layer of the adrenal cortex. Excess production of aldosterone is referred to as Hyperaldosteronism. Hyperaldosteronism can be of primary or secondary origin.

Hyperaldosteronism/ Conn's Syndrome

  • A tumor in your Adrenal Gland can cause hyperaldosteronism
  • Your blood pressure will be high, and you'll feel weak and very thirst
  • Doctors do surgery to remove tumors or give you medicine to block the hormone

Types of Hyperaldosteronism

  • Primary hyperaldosteronism is caused by a problem with one or both adrenal glands. It is a disease in which the adrenal Gland makes Too much aldosterone. Then it leads to Hypertension (High blood pressure)and low blood potassium Levels
  • Secondary hyperaldosteronism: it occurs due to when the Adrenal gland makes too much aldosterone. It is called secondary Hyperaldosteronism. It includes genes, Diet, Heart Failure (Cirrhosis With Ascites), Nephrotic syndrome etc. The condition mostly affects people 30 to 50 years old and is a common cause of high blood pressure in the Middle Ages.

Diagnosis

Primary High aldosteronism includes

  1. Abdominal CT Scan.
  2. ECG (Electrocardiogram)
  3. Blood Aldosterone.
  4. Blood Renin Activity
  5. Blood potassium Level
  6. Urinary Aldosterone
  7. Kidney Ultrasound.
  8. If you have a Primary Hyperaldosteronism your Plasma renin concentration (PRC)or Plasma Renin Activity (PRA) level will be lower than normal

Secondary HyperAldosteronism includes

  1. Serum Electrolyte Levels
  2. Plasma Aldosterone
  3. Plasma Renin Activity (PRA)
  4. Blood Tests
  5. Sometimes a Ct scan Or MRI
  6. In Secondary Hyperaldosteronism the PRC (Plasma Renin Concentration) or Plasma Renin Activity (PRA) will be higher than normal.

Treatment for Hyperaldosteronism

In the allopathic medicine system Treatments for Hyperaldosteronism vary depending on the type and cause.

  1. Surgery: if you have a primary Hyperaldosteronism it is caused by an adrenal gland tumor and is often treated with surgery it can sometimes be treated with medications. Removing the Adrenal tumor may control the symptoms. Doctors usually recommend Laparoscopic Surgery for tumors or growth that are only on one adrenal gland
  2. Medications: If there are growths on both adrenal glands, The doctor will give you diuretic medications like Spironolactone or eplerenone.  These don’t fix the problem but help manage the effects.
  3. Other conditions: For secondary hyperaldosteronism, your doctor will treat the underlying health problem. This is usually done with medications.
  4. Lifestyle changes. You might also have to make some lifestyle changes, especially if you have high blood pressure

These changes include the following

  1. Avoiding Alcohol
  2. Stopping smoking
  3. Exercise
  4. weight loss
  5. Low-sodium diet

AYURVEDIC VIEW

As per Ayurveda The Disease is caused by a Tridhosha. The reason for Primary hyperaldosteronism in Ayurveda is an imbalance of Vata dosha with the main involvement. Hyperaldosteronism has impaired Function of Aldosterone and has two main symptoms Hypertension and Hypokalemia. There are many Doshas and Dooshyas srotas Etc. involved there may be a pitta Dushti Due to endocrine defects Impaired Function of The Autonomic Nerves System causing a rise in Blood Pressure. It may be seen as Dushti Of Vata. In Sushruta it has mentioned that Vata, Dooshita Rakta (blood is vitiated by Vata) is both Sheeghra gami means Fast moving and Askandi (Hemodilution) The Hemodilution increases cardiac output and Vata being Ruksha and sheeta (cold) in nature may cause Stiffness of vessels which increases Peripheral vascular resistance and it leads to a hypertension.
