What is Afibrinogenemia & Hypofibrinogenemia?

Afibrinogenemia and Hypofibrinogenemia are sometimes also called congenital Afibrogenemia or congenital Hypofibrogenemia. Congenital is a condition that is present from birth. Afibrinogenemia and Hypofibrinogenemia is a type of congenital coagulopathy (congenital blood clotting disorder). These are inherited bleeding disorders in which the blood does not normally. It occurs when there is a deficiency of protein & called fibrinogen, which is needed for the blood to coagulate.

What is Fibrinogen?

Fibrinogen is a glycoprotein secreted by hepatocytes into the blood. In addition to being a blood clotting factor, it also provides some reactions of fibrinolysis, the process of dissolving blood clots, binds excess thrombin (therefore, fibrinogen is also called antithrombin I) and activates plasminogen. The complete absence of fibrinogen in plasma and platelets can be combined with rare episodes of mild bleeding. The main function of fibrinogen is to form fibrin clots, it is also involved in several other processes: inflammation, angiogenesis, and wound healing

What are the Causes of Afibrinogenemia Hypofibrinogenemia?

Congenital Afibrinogenemia is a rare family-hereditary disease from the group of hemorrhagic diathesis, characterized by bleeding associated with a congenital absence of fibrinogen. Congenital Afibrinogenemia is a rare recessive bleeding disorder, which means that you have inherited the defective gene from both parents. If you have one defective gene, then you are a carrier of Afibrinogenemia and can pass it on to your children.

Congenital Hypofibrinogenemia, can either be inherited in a recessive or dominant pattern. Recessive hypofibrinogenemia means that both parents carry the affected gene and pass it to the child. Dominant hypofibrinogenemia means that only one parent carries the affected gene and transmits it to the child. It may be asymptomatic or be accompanied by moderate bleeding, sometimes thromboembolism, and poor wound healing.
