Helo takes another step in making social space safe for users

by Swapnil Jukunte Search Engine Marketing and Optimization Company

With easy access to the internet and smartphones, social media has become an integral part of our lives. The evolved, new age social media users use this as a platform to engage with the wider community, express themselves, and consume news and information on social media apps. This has resulted in the high risk of circulation of fake news as well as inappropriate content on the apps. This underlines the fact that it is imperative for social media apps to mitigate this threat and ensure robust content moderation mechanism to keep fake news in check.

One such social media app that is taking steps in fighting this menace is Helo. In its commitment to make Helo a safer platform for its users, Helo removed of more than 6 million posts that were found violating its community guidelines as part of its commitment to offer a safer platform for users. While Helo has a robust content moderation process in place, it offers features like in-app reporting that enables the users to report content which they are uncomfortable with to do their bit on making the platform safer.

In fact, to keep fake news in check, Helo partnered with Alt News, a local, non-partisan fact-checking partner authority in October 2018. During the 2019 General Elections, Helo also reached out to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to comply with their instructions and establish an escalation channel, abiding by the Model Code of Conduct. Helo also ran a PSA in-app feature to remind users to be mindful of the content they publish on the app during the election season, encouraging them to use verified news sources and abide by the ECI’s Election Guidelines.

Social media apps available across the country shoulder the responsibility of reviewing and monitoring the content which is hosted by the app. The local content review and moderation team at Helo work very closely with the operations team, covering the 14 languages available on the platform. Helo’s moderation team harnesses machine learning technology as well as human intervention to review and take down content that violates its community guidelines- which clearly advise against the uploading or sharing of fake content, defamatory content, spam, intellectual property infringement, among other forms of malicious activity. These measures have been helpful in effective gatekeeping against the menace of fake news. This underlines Helo’s commitment to counter fake news.

In light of the above, the safety of its users on the app is one of the leading priorities for Helo. While it is clear that no social media platform can be 100% free from issues around fake news or misinformation, strong and multi-layered content moderation and fact-checking mechanisms have proved highly effective in controlling fake news from spreading. Further enhancing the guidelines and safety features will build user’s trust and enable them to optimise the use of social media. Safe and reliable content will also ensure that apps like Helo remain the most trusted source in India for news and trending topics.
