The holidays are traditionally a time to be with close friends and family, and celebrate the season. We love to eat, drink, and be merry, but this year, before you start menu planning, it's important to consider the dietary restrictions of everyone you'll be feeding. Most of us can handle the usual holiday staples, like pie and mashed potatoes, but with gluten allergies and special diets on the rise, this year it's time to try it a new way: the superfood NZ way!

First, we recommend eliminating gut-aggravating carbohydrate-rich foods, like pasta and bread. Instead, opt for extra veggies and fermented dishes, like pickled onions. Choose carbs with plenty of nutrients, such as sweet potatoes. The goal is a colorful plate of food that contains the healthiest options. Try to avoid stacking your table with foods that will leave guests feeling uncomfortably full.

The bar is another great opportunity to incorporate gut-healthy choices. How about a vodka kombucha cocktail with fresh-squeezed juice and a sprig of mint instead of offering hoppy craft beer? Make sure you have plenty of filtered water and an assortment of teas on hand for those that don't consume alcohol.

For dessert, we suggest a lighter choice, like fresh fruit with a dollop of whipped cream or a light, gluten-free pumpkin mousse served with a drizzle of maple syrup. The idea is a lighter twist on holiday flavors that still deliver the tradition, but spare your guests the additional calories and sugar hit.

With the holidays fast approaching, it's time to think about our gatherings and how we want to prepare our special holiday meals. This year is different in so many ways. Why not re-think your holiday menu by serving gut-friendly alternatives to heavy holiday fare. After all, isn't good health the best gift of all?
