Healing through Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

by Kevin Smith Author

Anyone concerned with young living essential oils in North Houston, TX, knows of the pleasant qualities of essential oils. Beyond their delightful aromas, essential oils have been used as traditional home remedies for centuries. However, many question the validity of such use. Do essential oils and aromatherapy actually hold proven health benefits? One study thinks so.

Essential Oils as a Pain Reliever

One of the most common ailments that plague humans is a general pain. It is so common to people that it dominates the world of home remedies, as one can become quite desperate to find relief. Aromatherapy is many people's go-to solution. Certain effects of essential oils have been proven, including central nervous system stimulation and mood enhancement. However, more research can be done about how exactly aromatherapy can affect your pain perception.

How the Study Works

This study, in particular, studies the effect of essential oils of orange. In order to see how this essential oil affected people's pain, this study employed sixty patients who were in the process of recovering from bone fractures and the orthopedic surgery that accompanied. These sixty patients varied in both age and condition. The youngest was 18, and the oldest was 72. In addition to small injuries, like that of a finger, patients had also suffered more serious predicaments like broken arms or legs.

Of the sixty participants, two groups were formed: a control group and an experimental group. Only the thirty in the experimental group were given routine schedules of essential oils. To measure their pain perception, the participants were assessed using the Visual Analogue Score, or VAS. Though it might sound foreign, you are probably quite familiar with the VAS. Simply, the VAS is the one to ten scale of pain that employs the usage of smiley (or quite sad) faces that correspond to differing pain levels. The vital symptoms of each patient were also monitored and recorded.

The Results

The first major finding of this study is that the orange essential oil was not quite effective at impacting physical symptoms. In both groups, vital signs stayed consistent throughout the trials. However, this study did find that the experimental group did report a significant reduction of pain. What this means for young living essential oils in North Houston, TX, is that, while aromatherapy may not be responsible for significant physical healing, it is a significant psychological aid that can be successful in reducing pain.
