Introduction

Choosing your right field position in soccer is a difficult task. When you are a beginner, things seem to be more difficult for you as you do not have much idea regarding where and how to start. In this article, Handy explains how to choose your position in soccer so that you can reign in the soccer field at your best.

The Considerations

Ways to choose your position in soccer are listed below:

 1. Your Coach’s Advice is Necessary- In which position you will play depends entirely upon the style of your coach’s playing tactics. Different strategies require different abilities on the field. This is why it is the duty of the coach to decide in which position they want you to fit in.

2. Goalkeeper, the Last Line of Defense- If you are tall enough (at least 1.82 meters or 5.9 feet) and have excellent hand-eye coordination, then you may target the spot of the goalie. But remember, a goalkeeper’s primary attribute is their reflex.

Most of the time, people commit mistakes by thinking that goalkeepers do not require much physical endurance as they don't have to run like the other players on the field. This is completely an error of judgment. Saving the team from conceding a goal is a tenacious job as a player and you have to be high on energy all the time.

3. A Defender’s Job- There are broadly two variants in the defender category - central defender and full-back defender. A central defender or a center back must be physically very strong and dominant while playing.

On the other hand, the position of full-back defender demands top-level agility and stamina. A full-back defender serves as a bridge between the defensive line and the attacking line of a team. So, the crossing ability must be good for this position.

4. A Midfielder’s Midas Touch- Like a defender, midfielders also have broadly three variants - defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, and winger. To become a defensive midfielder, you need to be calm and composed. The game-style of your team will flow with the rhythm of your style.

The spot of an attacking midfielder is a hybrid position and depends highly on the coach’s strategic movement for his team. But the essential requirements for this spot are long-range shots and quick-made combinations. Wingers must be the fastest players of their teams. A winger has to run end to end throughout the match. So, keeping the stamina from beginning to the end is the key to success.

5. A Striker’s Game- Strikers or forwards are also divided into two categories - center forward and outside or withdrawal forward. Both of these players need to have a perfect understanding between them.

An outside striker should be alert all the time as the central striker tries to open chances for them to possess the ball. The center forward has to be quick, bold, and physically very strong as they would take the bruises most of the time by carrying the ball with them. They open space so that the lower striker can come up quickly and fire the shot.

Conclusion

According to Handy, consulting with your coach or improvising yourself may help but you need to understand your body and playing style too in order to pick up the right position. Understanding your preferences, recognizing your biggest attributes, and adapting to the game is important to decide your future.
