Grey Routes and Revenue Leakages – Are you Secured?

by Harish Sheel SEO Expert Delhi

When we talk about the telecom industry and discuss about voice over internet protocol, there are a few terms that surface up as a threat to the security of an organisation. One such term is Grey Routes and revenue leakage being another.

But before we proceed further, let us first have a look at what are the problems that are given these terms and how do they affect the security features of any organisation that comes across such issues.

In a telecommunication network, there are mainly three routes of communication. In the telecommunications business, a white route is a route where both the source and the destination have a legal termination. This concept is opposed to a black route, where the route that is taken is illegal in both ends. Also as is common in the telecom (especially VoIP), the term grey route, is used to define a route that is legal for one party or country on one end, but illegal on the alternative end.

An example of the white/grey/black triad is often seen in telecom routes from the USA to India. In India, a telecom monopoly is granted only to a few large corporations and not just about every organisation. Thus we can say that all legal or simply "white" telecom traffic to the country is subject to the rates that are imposed by these corporations. To overcome such a restriction for the purpose of achieving lower costs for consumers, and to make profit in the process, many small parties set up VoIP routers in homes and offices around India. All the telecom traffic from the USA is sent to these set VoIP routers through IP and is then terminated to the local Indian PSTN. This process being followed is illegal in India making it the "black" or the black route, but completely lawful in the USA making it a "white" route there. The route where one side is legal while the other has an illegal route is said to be "grey".

When professional services firms grow, a revenue leakage occurs. Such a thing happens when time tracking data for each billable resource is incomplete or scattered depending on the system that is being used. The firms are unable to keep proper records of the spread sheets and lose track of the billing details. When this happens, we term it as revenue leakage. Professional services firms need everyone on their team that serves its customers i.e. right from sales to service providers in order to routinely submit timely reports every day and be profitable.

Revenue assurance is the solution that the experts have found for revenue leakage issues. It essentially ensures that the products and services provided by operators are adequately billed and all the revenues are collected in a timely manner from subscribers and wholesale partners alike. All the issues being faced at times makes us ask one question alike which is Grey Routes and Revenue Leakages – Are you Secured?
