Google’s security improved in 2015 for Android Devices.
In Android Annual Security Report, Google reported that Android users installed 40 percent less harmful apps in 2015 as compared to 2014. Google’s Android has been considered the least secure platform for apps downloading despite of its popularity a few years back. As the stigma towards Cyber security has increased, many platforms have started questioning the potential security of open source programs like Android.
The search giant is technically taking care of 400 million devices and 6 billion installed apps, where it is protecting these from unsought malware and various others bugs and viruses. “In the last year, we’ve significantly improved our machine learning and event correlation to detect potentially harmful behavior, ”a lead engineer wrote, in a blog post. “We strongly believe that rigorous, data-driven discussion about security will help guide our efforts to make the Android ecosystem safer,” he further explained.
Also the statistics show, there is downfall in collection data by apps over 40 percent to 0.08 percent per install. Further the Spyware also showed a decrease of over 60 percent to 0.02 percent per install.
The PHA has been found in as few as 0.15 percent of devices. These are the devices that install apps from Google Play. It has been notified that almost 0.5 percent devices that get apps from Play Store or open sources are residing with a PHA in them. Google is of the view that it should give its users a complete access to protection that is why it has designed Verify App service. It also did some alterations in Play Store which is to create ease for not installing a PHA.
In 2015, attempts to install PHA increased outside Google Play which was a positive sign. Android Marshmallow, however, also came with new protection and has added more precision and accuracy to handling apps. Moreover, Google and its Android platform is now releasing monthly security updates for flagship or upper mid-range models of major manufacturers. The timely release of monthly security updates for hundreds of unique Android device models and hundreds of millions of users has been ensured by the Google Security update Program. However, many devices are not still getting the security updates. The Google program manager ensured that the platform will soon expand its wings and cater the manufacturers and carriers that still have no contract with Google’s Security platforms.
In 2015, Android also get itself attached to Google’s Vulnerability Rewards Program, where the researchers get paid for bugs and viruses that cripple the system. Now the protection has been trifold to ensure better security.
