Going Up? Installing Elevators in Today’s Homes

by Kevin Smith Author

Years ago, about the only people who had elevators in their homes were the very rich who had multiple floors to reach. Not so anymore. Today, many homes are being built with elevators in them. Why? Because there are millions of Baby Boomers and those older – all part of an aging population – who are finding it difficult to climb or descend stairs.  Yet they want a multi-story house. As a result, home builders are building homes to be more accessible, with wider doorways and yes, elevators.  But what about those folks who want to stay in their current homes, but have an elevator installed? Can something be done for them? Yes.

New Homes, or Old, can a Accommodate an Elevator

Whether you want to remain in your existing home and have an elevator installed, or build new with one as an option, either are possible. What’s important is you find a reputable company that does residential elevator installation in Louisiana. How do you find that company? If you’re old school and not on the Internet (there are some folks who aren’t) look in your local phone book. If you’d prefer to search the Web, do that. But whatever company you choose, make sure they have a good rating with the Better Business Bureau or other reputable review services, usually online. Asking for references and being able to see pictures of their work is certainly smart also.

Ask questions, such as how long it will take, what the cost will be and of there are financing options available, whether there’s a warranty and whether there are any other options, in the event you’re told that for whatever reason, an elevator installation may not work well. And there usually are other options, including a stairlift (sometimes called a chairlift).

How Does an Elevator Help?

One of the greatest concerns as people age is falling, especially if it causes injury. And falling can happen for a variety of reasons. An in-home elevator eliminates that risk as you’re going up and down stairs. It also, among other things, provides easy mobility for people with mobility limitations, joint weakness or muscle atrophy – all things that can happen at any age. Of course, having an elevator allows seniors to remain in their homes longer, and adds value and appeal to the home at the same time.

Having an elevator in the home isn’t just for seniors, though. Younger folks who may be becoming caretakers for their aging parents could find this as an important option, maybe even a necessity. Even folks who are thinking ahead to their golden years, who are currently in the dream home and want to stay there as long as they can, should perhaps consider an elevator as a means of ensuring that.

There are many reasons why someone would want to have a residential elevator installation in Louisiana. Have you given any thought to what yours might be?
