Going Green At The 42 - Kolkata’s Ultra Premium Luxury Apartment Tower
“Going green’ - this is probably one
of the most commonly heard phrases of current times. While some are vowing to
use battery bikes instead of cars, many others are installing solar boards on
their rooftops. This shows that everyone is taking a step, no matter how small
or big, to reduce his carbon footprints. The truth is, sooner or later,
everyone will need to join the green movement. With natural resources,
especially fossil fuel, depleting at alarming rates, the world simply cannot
sustain itself for long. That is why, from now certain steps need to be
followed in order to ensure a stable future. One such step is green
construction. Builders, around the world, are focusing on constructing green
buildings. Like all other big metropolitans across the globe, Kolkata is now
getting its very first green building - The 42. The 42 is the very first
lifestyle project of its scale in Eastern India. It houses ultra premium luxury apartments, clubhouse, G+6 level car parking
area and much more.
What is a green building?
The
growth and development of skyscrapers have a huge impact on environment. The
manufacturing, design, construction and operation of these buildings impact
many natural resources. Thus, government and construction companies follow
certain methods to ensure that the construction and the structure does not
affect the environment adversely. Green building is a structure that has a
sustainable design. The construction work uses eco-friendly materials and the
design uses sunlight to a large extent for lighting and temperature moderation
purposes. The site uses energy, water and materials in a way that it reduces
building impacts on human health and the environment over the entire lifecycle
of the structure. Green building projects go well beyond the design of the
building itself. They include site planning, community and land use planning,
etc.
The 42 - most efficient green
building of Kolkata
Standing
at the heart of one of Kolkata’s busiest throughways, Chowringhee, The 42 is
the city’s most efficient green building. It has earned a prestigious green
building certification - the LEED Gold rating - as per IGBC standard.
Sustainable green building measures have been adopted for construction of the
252 metre tall tower. Materials with recycled content, local/ regional
materials, only certified wood and low emitting materials have been used.
Energy efficiency has been particularly focused upon. Low E and U value glass
has been used for thermal and day lighting control while power-saving
electrical fittings have been used for further energy-efficiency. Low flush
water fixtures have been installed. For landscaping and toilet flushing water
recycling from STP has been used.
Green
building is most definitely not a development trend. In fact, it is an approach
towards constructing buildings that are suited to the demands of its time. The
measures that have been adopted by The 42 has relevance and importance, which
will only continue to grow with passing time. The benefits to the Chowringhee
tower’s green building standards are manifold. Emissions reduction, water
conservation, temperature moderation and waste reduction are some of the most
important benefits.
