Devi Gayatri
is a deity of complex origins. Mother of the Vedas (the Vedamata), She is the
personification of the all-important Gayatri mantra. However, according to the
Skanda Purana, She is the wife of Brahma and a roopa of Sarasvati. And
according to Shaivite texts, Mahagaytri is the wife of Sadashiva.
The painting of Gayatri that you see on this page depicts a fair, five-headed Devi. She is seated on a gigantic lotus bloom, poised in lalitasana. The saree she is wearing is made up of pure gold layered upon gesso-work. Inlaid bits of semi-precious stones in green and red color form her sumptuous shringar. These metallic embellishments are the defining trait of the traditional Goddess Tanjore painting.
The dhashabhujadhari (ten-armed) Goddess raises the anterior right hand in blessing. The implements in the rest of her hands are indicative of her association with a wide variety of Hindu deities: the discus (Vishnu), the trident (Shiva), the lotus (Lakshmi), and the skullcup (Kali). As such, Devi Gayatri is a versatile deity of the Hindu pantheon.
