Glimmer of Hope aims to raise awareness

October will mark National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. And, the Dubuque Community Y again hopes to raise both money and awareness at its annual Glimmer of Hope Fashion Show.
The event, now in its 10th year, will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in the Cabaret Room at Mystique Casino.
The money raised will go toward the Dubuque Community Y's Victim Services Shelter.
According to Sandra Gonzales-Denham, senior director of mission advancement, the Victim Services Shelter is the only domestic violence shelter in the area.
The event was sold out in 2014 -- the first time it took place in the Cabaret Room at Mystique Casino -- with more than 220 people in attendance.
"We are most proud when we get to share out story," Gonzales-Denham said.
Lisa Bennett and Mike Callaghan, of 92.9 KAT FM, will serve as emcees. The fashion show -- a popular staple of the event -- will feature models from the Dubuque Police Department, the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office, City of Dubuque staff and Substance Abuse Services Center staff.
"Attendees really enjoy seeing them strutting their stuff," Gonzales-Denham said.
Graham's Style Store for Men and Women and Rhomberg's Fur and Leather Gallery will supply the clothing. Doland Jewelers will supply accessories. And, Body and Soul Wellness Center and Spa will provide hair and makeup services.
In addition to the fashion show, there will be a testimonial from someone who used the services at the shelter.
"These women overcome situations and challenges that are quite horrendous," Gonzales-Denham said.
Gonzales-Denham credited Verizon Wireless with supporting the Victim Services Shelter and Dubuque Bank & Trust with sponsoring the fashion show every year since its inception.
"We feel so fortunate to live in such a generous community," she said. "We're very grateful to all of our donors."Read more at:marieprom
