Get to Enchanting Places with Cheap Holidays to Algarve

by Amanda Sutcliffe Travel Deals

Algarve is continental Portugal's southernmost region, which is visited by plenty of tourists every year owing to its enchanting natural surroundings and a climate that remains pleasant throughout the year. Its beautiful beaches, breathtaking cliffs, and sandy islands have made it the most sought-after travel destinations in recent times. Besides the popular attractions of this Portuguese region, tourists also explore its wide range of offerings in entertainment, beach bars, and castles. The inner parts of Algarve are even more interesting with the presence of scenic villages and towns.

Your Algarve holidays would give you the opportunity to explore the region's best places. One of them is its capital city of Faro, which is home to an international airport and several industrial units. However, tourists visit this city to witness some old buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries in its Old Town. This part of the city has Roman and Moorish foundations and is enclosed by strong defensive walls. One of the prominent highlights of the Old Town is a cathedral, which is surrounded by charming cobblestone streets and squares. You can also find an excellent museum that houses some interesting exhibits.

While enjoying your cheap holidays to Algarve you can explore the border town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio, where you'll find many people speaking in the Spanish language. The main square, Praca Marques de Pombal, is visited by many travellers for its elegant cafes and restaurants. From the town, you can also take a ferry to another Spanish border town called Ayamonte. A 20-minute ride in this ferry would take you across the River Guadiana in order to reach Ayamonte, which has many tapas restaurants and traditional-styled shops. To the north of Vila Real is the village of Castro Marim, which is worth visiting for its 13th-century castle and Reserva Natural do Sapal nature park.

During your Algarve holidays, you can also get to the west coast of the region, which has wide beaches and some amazing sea cliffs. This part of the Portuguese region is relatively untouched by development and offers vast stretches of coastline for tourists and the perfect conditions for enthusiastic surfers. Beginners can take some lessons from any of the surf schools that are located near the coasts. While getting around in this part of Algarve, you can also visit the traditional villages of Odeceixe and Carrapateira. The lively town of Aljezur would give you the chance to witness the ruins of a Moorish castle built in the 11th century.

If you wish to be in an urban setting and yet close to a beach-like environment, head to Portimao. It is the second largest city in Algarve and features a popular theatre complex and an award-winning museum. Over the years, it has transformed itself into one of the region's exciting hubs of cultural activities and is also an international port of call for luxury cruises today. Further inland, you'll find a standard racetrack for the Formula 1 championships. You’d also like to visit a modern marina located at a short distance from the Praia da Rocha Beach.
