What is a transformer?

A transformer is a machine which is used to bring the voltage up or down in an alternating current type of electrical circuit. A good transformer can easily be used to convert an AC power to a DC type of power. There are various types of transformers used in almost every house of today’s fast paced modern era. Transformer is a very special kind of electrical device. It is useful when it comes to transferring energy between 2 or more electrical circuits. This transfer of electrical energy occurs with the help of the phenomenon known as electromagnetic induction. A type of force called as electromotive force is produced through electromagnetic induction. It is exposed to magnetic fields which vary with time. Types of a transformer

The capacitor voltage transformer – In this type of transformer a capacitor divider is perfectly used to reduce the high voltage. This is done before the application that happens to primary winding. Leakage transformer- In this type of transformer the functioning is same but the physical structure is somewhat different. The windings of this type of transformer is loosely coupled. Resonant transformers- This type of transformers have the feature of using resonance to generate a very high voltage. Pulse transformer- It is one of the finest type of transformers and has gained a lot of popularity in a very short period of time. It is a very special type of transformer and is mainly used to transmit mostly digital signalling. This happens while providing an electrical isolation. It is most commonly used in the Ethernet computer networks.

The applications of transformers

Transformers have a variety of applications. The wires of the transformers have a resistance that loses energy due to the process of joule heating. Transformers are used in huge quantities in electronic products. There are various signal and audio transformers, which have the function of coupling the stages of an amplifier. A balun transformer is used for converting a signal basically referred to ground in to a signal that has the perfectly balanced voltages. Thus transformers have various purposes and have become an essential part of the various applications used in day to day life.
