The newly launched guide highlights how weak hip flexors can cause posture problems, pain, and injury. As with any muscle, the more the hip flexor is worked, the stronger it becomes. Flexibility exercises can also help them to become strong and agile.

Hip flexors run directly in front of the hips. Nine muscles make up the hip flexor and the muscles vary in size, length and dominance.

The main cause of weakness in the hip muscles is a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting too much at a desk can cause weak, tight hip flexors. However, athletes and active individuals can also develop weak hip flexors. Exercises can help strengthen the hip flexor and prevent a muscle imbalance, lower back pain, hip pain, and other issues. Beadle has written extensively on healing strained and tight hip flexors here https://stretchhipflexors.com.

Beadle’s new guide highlights the importance of doing both strengthening and stretching exercises on a regular basis. A straight leg raise is one way to engage the hip flexors. While lying on the floor facing upwards, one leg should be kept straight and lifted to a 45 degree angle. Repeating this exercise 10 times for each leg will strengthen the hip flexor.

After the 10 repetitions of leg lifts, completing 10 short, quick pulses before switching to the other leg will further bolster the hip flexor muscles.

A standing knee raise is another excellent way to strengthen the hip flexor. The knee should be lifted up to the level of the hip and then slowly lowered back to the starting position. Two sets of 10 repetitions for each leg should be performed.

To stretch the hip flexor a kneeling lunge is a terrific stretch. The knee should be bent at 90 degrees and shoulders should be back for good posture while shifting weight forward on to the lead leg.

The hip flexor can also be stretched by bending the knee and lifting the heel behind and then bringing the heel up to the glutes. The ankle should then be grasped and held with the knee pointing at the floor.

It is recommended both individuals with a sedentary lifestyle trying to relieve pain and athletes seeking to keep their hip flexor muscles strong perform these stretches and strengthening exercises.
