The recipes were created by Loraine Sextro in the prohibition era and have since been passed down through the generations. The site explains that their products are made in small batches using small distilleries and barrels, which provide a unique prohibition era taste. The new website also includes a store locator and an online ordering facility so you can get flat rate shipping throughout the USA.

The Iowa Legendary Rye Distillery traces its roots right back to the town of Templeton in Carroll County Iowa during the prohibition era. It was here that Lorine Sextro distilled the first batch on the family farm in May 1932.

With the repeal of prohibition in 1933, the secret family recipe was handed down through Loraine Sextro’s descendants until 2015 when the first legal batch was eventually distilled. Now customers can buy these quality drinks online.

Iowa Legendary Rye is still distilled to the same recipe and methods used by Lorine Sextro, using only locally grown Rye grain. Their signature White Rye is smooth and slightly sweet and is bottled straight from the still.

This light rye spirit has won numerous awards since its relaunch and is available in stores as far afield as Texas and California as well as in multiple outlets in Iowa.

Their aged Rye is also distilled to the original methods, even faithfully replicating the use of small fifteen-gallon barrels for the 18-month aging process. These were used originally as they could be hidden more easily during the prohibition era.

The distillation process still utilizes small 26-gallon barrels, which preserve the authentic prohibition-era taste. The 18-month aged black label Iowa Legendary Rye is a rich caramel in coler and is also a multiple award winner.

Their red label private reserve also faithfully follows the authentic prohibition-era small 26-gallon distillation process. This product is then aged in a used barrel for 8 months before being transferred to a second used barrel for a further 12 months of maturation. The result is an extra level of smoothness usually only found in much more mature spirits.

The distillery also offers Iowa Legendary Rye Vodka, using a modified vodka flute on their custom stills. It is then twice distilled, and charcoal filtered for absolute purity. The resultant spirit has a unique slight rye flavor and has also gained multiple awards since its introduction.
