ESTA means Electronic System for Travel Authorization and as the name itself suggests; ESTA is a completely paperless, online procedure to obtain authorization to travel to US. Introduced by the US government, ESTA enables any individual eligible as per Visa Waiver Program, to travel to US without a visa.

Visa Waiver Program was started on January 12, 2009 by the US government wherein citizens of the listed companies did not require a visa to travel to US. Thereby, ESTA was encouraged for the same.

Same can be denied for security reasons.

Who can apply for ESTA?

Any traveller intending to obtain ESTA should fulfil certain conditions.

The traveller should

Be a citizen of any of the countries listed under Visa Waiver Program
Not possess a tourist Visa for US
Have a valid passport issued by a VWP country
Not have violated or dishonoured any of the terms and conditions during his /her previous entries to US.
Not have been refused a visa earlier
Not have been deported from USA for any reasons
Not have been arrested or convicted for any crime or offense

How to apply?

ESTA can be applied online by following few simple steps.

Step 1- Fill the online application, complete all the required fields correctly, and answer all the questions.

Step 2- Thoroughly revise your form for errors and mistakes.

Step 3- Submit the form.

Step 4- Save the form for future reference.

Step 5- Pay the application fees of US$ 14 online.

Step 6- Remember your login details.

Step 7- View status of your application.

Possible responses received:

Authorization Approved: Travel is authorized.
Authorization Pending: Traveller is required to check the ESTA website for a final response within 72 hours.
Travel Not Authorized: Traveller has been denied the authorization. In this case, the traveller will have to obtain a non-immigrant visa from US embassy or consulate.

Although most of the applications are approved in less than a minute; it is recommended by the US government to Apply ESTA USA Online at least 72 hours before the travel to avoid last minute hassles.
