General Information and Applications of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone

by Sanjeev Yadav SEO Consultant
Methyl isobutyl ketone is an organic compound having formula (CH3)2CHCH2C (O) CH3. This ketone is a colorless liquid and is used as a solvent for gums, resins, paints, varnishes, lacquers, and nitrocellulose. It is basically made from acetone via a three-step process. First acetone undergoes an aldol reaction to give diacetone alcohol, which readily dehydrates to give methyl oxide. Mesityl oxide can then be hydrogenated to give MIBK

Another major use of this methyl isobutyl ketone is as a precursor to N-(1, 3-dimethyl butyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), an antiozonant used in tires. 6PPD is prepared by reductive coupling of MIBK with 4-aminodi phenylamine.

Properties of methyl isobutyl ketone

•    Methyl isobutyl ketone is sparingly soluble in water, hence is useful for liquid-liquid extraction.
•    It has a similar polarity to ethyl acetate, but greater stability towards aqueous acid and base.
•    It can be brought in use to extract gold, silver, and other precious metals from cyanide solutions.
•    In order to determine the levels of those dissolved metals.
•    Methyl isobutyl ketone is also used as a denaturing agent for denatured alcohol.
•    When mixed with water or isopropyl alcohol MIBK serves as a developer for PMMA electron beam lithography resist.
•    MIBK is used as a solvent for CS in the preparation of the CS spray used currently by British police forces.
•    It is a stable medium evaporating liquid as well as compatible with several organic materials.
•    Purity (% by weight): ≥ 99,6
•    Appearance at 20° C: clear liquid free from suspended materials
•    Density at 20°C (g/cm3): 0,800 - 0,803
•    Boiling point at 1013 Pa: 116°C
•    Flashpoint (closed cup): 16 °C
•    Water solubility at 20°C:
•     MIBK in water (mass fraction): 1, 9%

Use of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone

•    It is used as a chemical intermediate, a solvent for manufacturing paints, rubbers, pharmaceuticals, other chemicals, and industrial cleaners.
•    It is used in the semiconductor industry.
•    MIBK is very efficient at dissolving resins used in paints, inks, lacquers, and other types of surface coatings.
•    It can also be used in order to extract, separate and purify various products.
•    This chemical is used in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical industries, in fine chemistry
•    It is also commonly used as a solvent in paints, lacquers, varnishes, and adhesives.
•    Methyl isobutyl ketone is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of a rubber antiozonant additive in tires.
Thailand is a leading exporter of methyl isobutyl ketone. The methyl isobutyl ketone being offered is highly recommended by clients for wide usage of multiple applications. These products are being manufactured as per the client’s requirement.
Thus, to conclude, methyl isobutyl ketone has its massive use as a solvent for paints.
