Gap Year Pros and Cons to Think About

by Kristen White Blogger
Gap years are highly encouraged by experts because this time provides students a chance to take a breath before they settle in to their next phase which can either be college or a full-time career.  Life moves fast and once these programs are in motion, it can hard to get away and take time for yourself.  After being in school for 12+ years, students need a chance to take a break and do something different which often involves traveling abroad.  A downside to this is the interruption of momentum where someone might have a hard time getting back on track so filling the year with meaningful activity may be the perfect solution.

Individuals can search for a gap year abroad program near me on the internet to see which agencies have slots open, programs that align with the individual’s interest and are affordable in the budget.  One of the benefits of taking a gap year, is the ability to travel and see other cultures while expanding skills and qualifications for the resume. Participants in these programs will learn a new language, develop relationships with other members as well as their host family and will acquire an appreciation for diverse world views which they would not have learned about staying at home.  It is important to note that this cannot be a last minute decision for the gap year because the process takes time due to international travel regulations, documentation and the application process.

One of the negatives of taking a gap year that people frequently point out is the delay in starting college or employment which can cause a student to miss out on opportunities. While this is true for some, it is also worth noting that if a person isn’t sure what they really want in life then a gap year can help them find it through hands-on experience and expanding their knowledge.  If you would rather not put off moving into the next phase then another approach is to start searching for summer travel programs for high school students so you can take advantage of these programs before graduation.

This is a great item to have on the college application or job resume as universities and employers are looking for characteristics that stand out from everyone else and show global experience. The cost of participating in an international program or taking time off is another concern but this can be alleviated by saving ahead or considering the investment this type of program can be in enhancing the person’s future prospects.

Taking a gap year may not be for everyone but it is worth reviewing the pros and cons based on the person’s unique situation and what they want from life. Having a year to explore, see new ways of doing things and meeting different cultures may be exactly what is needed to provide direction and solidify what the young adult wants to do with the rest of their life. Take time to research the various agency travel options to find a short or long-term program option that is affordable and meets the expectations and interests of the individual.
