The Indian government might be against gambling, which is evident by the strict gambling laws passed by the government and followed in most of the states till date, but online gambling could not be stopped. It is a proven fact that India’s online gaming trends are increasing day by day and statistics reveal that huge number of Indians are regular gamers till date.

Is Gambling legal in India?

India has different gambling laws for different states as gambling is a matter to be looked after by the state and not the central. However a common gambling law known as The Public Gambling Act of 1867, states that any form of betting game that involves skills are allowed in the country. Making it very obvious, a game that involves luck and chances are banned. Majority of the Indian states has made amendments in this law. However, no state have still legalised gambling completely except for three, viz., Goa, Sikkim and Daman & Diu.

Goa has approved gambling by permitting casinos only in five star hotels and non land based offshore cruises. Quite a lot of casinos legally operate in the state. Daman and Diu walk on the footprints of Goa. However the state of Sikkim has given permission to the casinos and special licenses are provided to them for operating the gambling business. On special days, gambling becomes legal throughout the state by the government’s grants. Moreover, Sikkim was the first state in India to legalise Online Gambling completely.

Online Gambling in India

Internet gambling is a flourishing business in the country with huge number of fans and followers for it.  But the government still has a question mark on the legality of online gambling. Although no cases of busting online gambler has been recorded in the history of India as of now. While many are in the favour of legalizing online betting in the country, a very few are against it. The Supreme Court of India is to give a final verdict on the legalisation of online betting in the country by January 2016.
