Further Perodua Car Recalls Not Affecting Market Share
by Alan Jake I like to workPerodua is Malaysia's
largest automotive manufacturer. It was formed in 1992 but launched its first
car, the Perodua Kancil in 1994. Perodua serves Malaysia, Singapore, Sri
Lanka Perodua is exported to Australia mainly because of the company's association with Daihatsu
Motor Co.
The
manufacturer began with minicars and super small cars and tried hard not to
have the same cars as its major competitor p, Proton. In recent years its
targeted market segment started to overlap especially when the Perodua Myvi was
launched. It became direct competition with the Proton Savvy which Proton tried
to improve by launching the Proton Iriz. The Perodua Myvi turned out so well it
has been kicking Proton models. The success of the Perodua Myvi and other
Perodua models successfully propelled the car manufacturer to the top spot in Malaysia’s
automotive industry.
Perodua
Myvi uses Daihatsu components particularly, engines and transmissions. This is
because Daihatsu had a 20% stake in the company. In 2016 Perodua sold its
largest number of cars achieving 35.7% market share.
The
Perodua Myvi is basically a version of Daihatsu Sirion. The Perodua Alza is a
version of the Daihatsu Boon Luminas, the Perodua Axia is a version of Daihatsu
Ayla. The Perodua Aruz is an SUV version of the Toyota Rush. This means that a
lot of the recalls that Perodua would have to make would be related to Daihatsu
engine and transmission faults. It faces the same quality issues of rebadging
cars from other manufacturers.
For
instance, when Toyota Motor Philippines issued a recall for its Wigos model in
the Philippines that affected the Perodua Axis in Malaysia. This is because in
the Toyota Wigos is produced as the Daihautsu Alya in Indonesia and in Malaysia
the Toyota Wigos is rebadged by Perodua as the Perodua Axis. So when 15,000
Wigos produced between April to December 2017 were recalled last September over
a faulty wire in the engine, the Perodua Axis was implicated as well because of
the rebadge. The issue with the wire was that it would break because of engine
vibration and this would result in a decrease in engine power and increase the
risk of a crash.
This
was not the first recall issued by
Perodua. In 2013, the compact car manufacturer announced a recall of 74,000 of
its 2011-2012 Perodua MyVi cars due to a fault in the electronic power
steering. The company warned that the issue could affect the steering response
time when the car is tea selling at low speeds.
Owners
are advised to return vehicles to their nearest Perodua dealership, and avoid
third party repairs or self-repair using the Perodua workshop manual. Dealerships will make
all repairs free of charge regardless of the vehicles age or warranty status.
Perodua
has not issued many recalls for its cars since it began making them. It is
still a popular brand for small, fuel efficient affordable vehicles in
Malaysia. Over the last couple of years, it has managed to outdoor its biggest
competitor Proton by taking the bigger share of the automotive market.
Perodua
cars are exported to other countries and one of a very few export cars you may
come across Australia but the company has big plans and they are looking to
increase their production and possibly their exports to other countries. So
far, it is still a reasonably safe car brand on the market, at least in
Malaysia.
