Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world since it topped out in 2008 - this is a well- known fact. However, many do not know what purpose this building serves apart from holding the record of being the tallest building. Although, no one can deny that the major purpose served by Burj Khalifa is that it promotes Dubai tourism. Owing to its height, it attracts plenty of tourists from all over the world.   1. Burj Khalifa was formerly known as Burj Dubai. This name was used till it's inauguration.

  4. It holds several other world records - highest number of stories in the world, tallest free standing structure in the world, highest occupied floors in the world, longest service elevator,  and elevator with longest travel distance which is to the 140th floor.  
  5. Talking about elevators, the speed of the elevator is 10 metres per second, making it one of the fastest elevators in the world. It has a total of 58 such elevators.  
  6. It used to hold the record of highest outdoor observation decks but lost it to Canton Tower in December 2011. 
  7. The inspiration for the design of the building is taken from the flower hymenocallis. The central core of the flower emerges out of the layers of petals and towers over them. The architectural style of the Burj Khalifa is called Neo futurism. So, the building is a Neo futurism depiction of the flower.  
  8. The construction of the building took a massive 22 million man hours to be completed. There has been up to 12,000 workers a day working at its construction. In addition to that, the construction took 55,000 steel regards and concrete of 110,000 tons. The total aluminium used in the building weighs as much as five A380 airplanes.  
  9. The tower is 828m high without the antenna. The antenna adds to the height and makes the tip 829.8m high. It is 197.8m taller than the second highest building in the world - Shanghai Towers and an astonishing three times the size of Eiffel Tower. 
  10. 300,000 sq. ft. is covered by office spaces while residential spaces take up to a giant 1.85 sq. ft.  
  11. The lobby of the residential area features this unique creation called World Voices. It is an arrangement of 196 cymbals facing upward and music is created with water dropping on them. This water feature installation is by Jaume Plensa and the 196 cymbals represent the 196 countries in the world.  
  12. The Downtown Dubai district came into being, in its entirety, alongside Burj Khalifa - such is the amount of business brought in by this building.
