FROM LECTURE HALLS TO PRISON HALLS

by Abi D. Marketing

What will happen in the future is not known by anyone. At least, JaKevis Brown has proven it. Several times ago, he was accepted into 28 colleges with over $300,000 collectively in scholarships. Then, he chose Southeastern University in Lakeland as where to go next. Majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders, due to his slight stutter and wanting to heal himself and others he was very optimistic with his decision and there was many dreams to reach ahead. Even when while he was attending the campus, he was very fascinated.

“I started out at Southeastern University and I loved the atmosphere! You could feel the Holy Spirit all around the campus, the President of Southeastern University, Dr. Kent Ingle stressed the importance of finding your Divine Design!” he said during the interview.

For his strong Christian belief, Brown also confessed to being very submissive as he said “I let Jesus lead” me. And the belief seems to guide him to be in the next phases in life, and also helping him discover his divine design. After a semester in college, he went back home and worked as a car salesman. Then, only after a few months he was granted an opportunity to work under a contract with Polk County Sheriff providing courthouse securities.

One more time, Brown realized that this is what God does to him, “I was being tugged into Law Enforcement! A career that has been on my heart just never pursued.”

The boy then started to look for Law Enforcement Agencies that would hire him as a cadet,  a 19-year-old boy with only a semester of college experience. In fact, there was only one agency that wanted to hire him; It was The Florida Department of Corrections where he would begin his career in Law Enforcement. The Florida Department of Corrections is the largest agency in the State of Florida and the third largest prison system in the country.

“After people heard about my new position, it seemed like everyone had something negative to say, “you should’ve stayed in school’ or ‘ you are not going to make it in a state prison’”. Of course, what other people thought about him just made Brown simply discouraged. However, Brown just remembered that if God brought him too it, he will most definitely bring him through it. “Yes, college is an amazing opportunity, but it simply isn’t for everyone! It’s ok to go to a trade school and earn a certification” said Brown.

In the agency, Brown works as a “Special Risk” employee with the state of Florida. Interestingly, the salary is great and there is so much room for promotion, “it also has amazing benefits,  One of the benefits is getting a chance of retirement in 25 years, at age 44” said Brown.

So, how about his college? Does Brown only leave it behind? The answer is no. After graduating from the Corrections Academy in October, he plans  on going back to a university to finish his bachelorette degree. “As a state officer, a lot of college classes are free at Public Florida Universities and Colleges! Upon completion of my degree I plan on transferring to Community Corrections to become a State Probation Officer”, he ended.
