Freight Transport
by Eric Jan seoDirect Freight Australia is one of the leading
freight companies in the thriving freight business in Australia. Just like the other
freight companies, they are engaged in the service of helping transport
commodities, goods or cargo physically in behalf of a shipper.
The
shippers are companies that need to have the goods to be shipped. The type of
freight carrier they use depends on what they ship which could be commodities,
goods or cargo.
It is
the most cost-effective way of shipping locally or crosses the country.
These
freight services are commissioned by individuals or organizations provided
their shipments are large and in excess of 150 lbs.
Types
To
date, there are four major types of freight transportation available for
shippers to be able to use freight shipping. These would include the primary
one which is ground (road), rail (by train) ocean (by ship) and air.
Every
one of these transport types has its own methods and processes with which to
conduct their transport business. The reasons are mainly dependent on the kind
of means they carry the transport to their destinations but also on the
different requirements needed
Basic freight
There
are three Bills of Lading that are created and disbursed. One is for the
shipper, upon pickup. The second one is for the consignee during delivery and
the third one is for the carrier with all the information included during the
booking of the shipment.
The
freight processing is the procedure of transporting the commodities, goods or
cargo by land, sea or air. Commonly associated with freight shipping are mostly
trucks, railroad cars (freight trains of old) and large ships carrying
containers housing the goods or cargo.
Definitions: freight
Nowadays,
there are two accepted meanings of freight in and out of the industry. First,
freight can be looked as cargo or goods transported by truck or some other
means of transportation. Others refer to it as the cost of the transport.
Also,
it can be referred to as simply the amount you are charged to transport goods.
Raw lumber is referred to as an example of freight, transported to a furniture
company. The transport itself can be referred to as ordinary freight to spare
the expense.
While
each of these modes of transportation has unique benefits, knowing which method
is right for your business requires careful consideration.
Charges and fees
Freight
charges are the cost of transportation services. These freight costs include
packaging, palletizing, load or unload costs, carrier fees and insurance costs.
Freight
is the transportation of goods, thus, the meaning of freight charges is the
cost of transportation services. According to the Business Dictionary, freight
costs include packaging, palletizing, load or unload costs, carrier fees, and
insurance costs.
Freight rate
The
price with which a certain cargo is delivered from one point to another is
called a freight rate (it is simple called freight in ship chartering and
historically.)
The
price also depends on the form of the cargo, the mode of transport (truck,
ship, train, and aircraft), the weight of the cargo and the distance to the
delivery destination.
Carrier / freight
There
is a difference between a carrier and freight. A common carrier is an
individual or a company that transports goods on regular routes at set rates,
even at set days.
A
freight forwarder is a person or a company that organizes shipments for
individuals or corporations to get goods from its origins to its destination.
These forwarders typically contract with a carrier to move the goods.
The
common carrier is either a public or private body that transport goods or
people for a fee. Utility companies and
telecommunications companies are also considered common carriers.
A
common carrier, unlike a private carrier, must provide its service to anyone
willing to pay its fee, unless it has grounds for refusal.
Freight density
For
purposes of rates and charges, the cargo is simply measured in cubic inches. First,
the measurement is on the cargo’s length, width and height. Next, the three measurements
(length, width and height) are multiplied.
Then,
the total cubic inches is divided by 1,728 (the cubic inches in a cubic foot).
Finally, the weight (pounds) is divided by the total cubic feet.
Ideally,
the seller pays the freight charges to a major port or other shipping
destination and the buyer pays the transport costs. To date, there are three
major forms of services of freight.Learning all about these different types of
freight services is a good first step in understanding the complexities
involved in package deliveries.
