Free Website Directory Sites to Boost Your Ranking

by John Smith Learner

There are many useful ways to improve your search rankings and website traffic, but many of them don't have the added benefit of being free. Assuming you ignore the short time it takes to provide a site description, site directories are a really free way to get higher rankings in Google search results, increase referrals, and overall increase your website promotion. Of course, not all link directories are created equal, so let's take a look at some of the things that separate the good from the great.

When visiting a Free Website Directory, first go to the category that best matches your website. If it's a quality web directory, it will include a wide range of detailed categories defined in an easy-to-view hierarchy. The best directories cater to all types of niche sites, so if you own a franchise-related site, you may want to add it to the franchise category rather than settle for a very general business category. By finding your niche niche category and submitting a URL, search engines like Google will be better able to link your site to your chosen keywords.

Since owning and maintaining a website directory can be a very tedious and time-consuming task, some directory owners automate submission approval, which can save time, but is definitely a bad idea. Human-edited directories actually do better because of stricter submission standards. If sites are accepted in the wrong categories or do not follow the submission guidelines, the directory will quickly degenerate into a useless list of backlinks to sites that may or may not provide useful content for Internet users and researchers. By taking this extra time to validate your links, users can continue to benefit from your site being part of the directory.

Although most web directories have good submission standards and are easy to navigate, they mean nothing if the approval process is too slow. Some directories are very slow to accept new URL submissions, while others are run by people who are so short on time that they forgot to put it all together. This can be time-consuming, so it's better to apply to sites that are constantly accepting submissions and maintain an active directory. People who maintain an active submission process with quick approvals are more likely to keep up with the latest trends, which improves the quality of their site and thus the backlinks that direct web surfers to your site.

Assuming the directory you're submitting your site's URL, title, and description meet the above criteria, you're probably in for a good thing. Obviously, if you're looking for free online marketing and promotion for your website, you don't want directories turning around at the last minute and asking you for an annual subscription. It doesn't hurt to fill out and submit all the forms before you even know you have to pay. Even directories that require back linking can be annoying because it requires extra effort on your part and can reduce the effectiveness of the original backlink.
